What Temperature do you cook Pizza on a Traeger Pellet Grill

When I think of how to make pizza on a Traeger grill, the first thing that comes to me is what temperature should I cook my pizzas at?

The grills can cook the pizzas successfully, but ensure that you have the temperature on the highest setting and preheat the grill for 5 minutes before inserting the pizza inside.

This process is a learning curve but typically, the hotter the grill, the better. Also, the time required to cook pizza on a Traeger grill depends on the temperature of the grill.

In cooking multiple pizzas, you would observe that your first pizza took a long time to cook compared to the last one.

This happens because the grill gets hot towards the end of your cooking session making it faster to cook a pizza. So, the highest temperature setting it is.

The Traeger grills go up to 500 F and while this is quite hot, the best pizza ovens can go up to 800 F, so you can see here that you are not going way above the ideal cooking temperature for a pizza.

Instead, it is quite a decent temperature to cook a pizza and you might want to cook it for at least 10 minutes or so depending on the current temperature of the grill.

The Traeger grills are huge to make a really large pizza which would not be possible inside a medium-sized pizza oven. Try to take advantage of this and make a large, smoky cheese and pepperoni pizza for yourself.

I think the best pizza I made on a Traeger grill has to be a mushroom pizza. There are different other pizza recipes that you can try on your Traeger grill and it is fun to experiment.

Things to remember while cooking a pizza on the Traeger Grill

1. The first important point that you need to remember before you cook pizza on the Traeger grill is to preheat your grill for a few minutes.

I would suggest that heating it for about 5-10 minutes is pretty good but you can go for a longer time.

2. Close the lid of the Traeger grill while you are cooking the pizza inside.

Pizzas has to cook from the top and bottom, so it would be ideal to close the lid so that the heat stays inside and the pizza cooks the way it should be.

3. Another reason to close the grill would be that the smoky flavor from the wood pellets stays in the food and that is what makes pizzas cooked inside the Traeger grills so irresistible.

If you have never cooked a pizza in this grill then you are missing out on a lot.

4. Make sure that you have the pellet hopper loaded. The last thing you want to do is run out of pellets which would cause a decrease in the temperature of the grill and result in a pizza that cooks not so well.

Cooking Pizza inside a Traeger Grill

Cooking a pizza in a Traeger grill is pretty easy and you can do it in multiple ways.

The first would be cooking the crust separately and then cooking it with the pizza toppings and the Mozzarella cheese.

The second method that I would highly recommend would be cooking pizza on a pizza stone using parchment paper.

Both these methods yield amazing results and you are going to enjoy the pizzas that you cook this way.

So, without wasting any more time let’s get started with different ways to cook a pizza on a Traeger grill.

How to make Pizza on a Traeger Grill without Pizza Stone

In cooking pizza on a Traeger grill without a pizza stone, you need to prepare the pizza dough and I like using New York Style pizza dough for this recipe and once you are done with the kneading and proofing, you need to roll out the dough on a surface.

Once you get the pizza dough nice and rolled out, place the crust on the frill and try to cook it on both sides.

The grill does not need to be at the maximum heat setting on this and you need to cook this with the lid open.

Once you cook the dough, remember you just need to cook the dough and not make it crispy.

Since you are done cooking one side of the dough, you need to take it out and put some toppings and cheese on top of the cooked side.

Then cook the pizza on the slightly uncooked side to finish cooking. This is the best way to cook pizza on a traeger grill as you end up with a crispy crust.

You do this so that you do not overcook the toppings and cheese. The dough needs to cook longer because it has to get crisp in the end, but the cheese might burn if you cook the toppings along with it since the beginning.

Again put the pizza you made on the grill and it would take about a couple of minutes to be done.

Once you see the toppings are well cooked you can remove the pizza using one of the best pizza peels and then serve the pizza hot!

How to make Pizza on a Traeger Grill with a Pizza Stone

I personally recommend using a pizza stone as it is one of the best ways to cook pizzas on a Traeger grill.

If you are wondering how to make pizza on a Traeger grill using a pizza stone then a short answer would be-it is easier than you think.

I usually use a Pizza Stone even when cooking the pizza inside my home oven, so cooking pizza on a Traeger grill with a pizza stone can change your game and cook pizzas in 10 minutes or even less.

If you do not have a pizza stone then you can go ahead with the method mentioned above as that is pretty easy and does not require any additional accessories.

You can even use a pizza stone alternative and try them out on the grill as they could work pretty well.

At this point, if you don’t have a pizza stone, you need to just get creative with whatever you have at home.

Now, using a pizza stone, place the pizza stone while you preheat the grill so that the pizza stone gets hot and all ready to cook with it.

I recommend using good pizza steel since they are durable and can retain very high temperatures with ease. Considering Pizza steel vs Pizza stone, Pizza Steel is always the better option.

Once you have preheated the grill for about 10 minutes, you can then roll out your dough, make your entire pizza, and place it on top of the hot pizza stone.

Leave it to cook inside the grill at the max heating temperature of the grill.

Now, after 5-6 minutes check on your pizza and see how far the crust has been cooked, if need you can turn the pizza else just cook it for a few minutes longer.

Make sure you are cooking it till the bottom turns golden brown and once done you can take off the pizza from the grill.

You can use parchment paper in case you do not want to slide the pizza on the stone or if you want better results.

The pizza cooked using this method is pretty amazing considering the taste of the pizza and the way the crust gets all crispy.
