A classic stromboli uses all the ingredients used in a pizza. It has the traditional pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. You can use different fillings inside the stromboli, and I recommend a few towards the end of the post.

But I have used this recipe’s classic combo of pepperoni, cheese, and pizza sauce. The results were out of this world and probably one of the best things I have made.

If you do not have pepperoni, make some white sauce and add roasted vegetables or leftover chicken to get the best-tasting stromboli.

You can switch the fillings, making stromboli a versatile recipe.

Why I love this recipe

It is easy to make- If you have a pre-made dough, this recipe is hands-off and easy to make.

It does not involve a lot of technique, and the results look like you put in a lot of effort to make this recipe, which makes it good as an appetizer or finger food for guests.

Quick- If you use leftover pizza dough, then you can whip this up in your kitchen within 15 minutes. Of course, the baking takes another 25 minutes, but it is ‘set it and forget it’ at that point.

Versatile- You can switch the fillings and try different combinations. My favorite is this one with pizza sauce, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese.

But you can also make it all vegetarian and sautee finely chopped veggies in salt and pepper and use white sauce and cheese as a filling.

There are many more options, but I love these two, and I’m sure you and your family would love them too.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Pizza Dough– You can use the Pillsbury pizza dough or any ready-made pizza dough to make this stromboli. I used some leftover homemade pizza dough from this Autolyse Pizza recipe.

Pizza Sauce- You can use any sauce of your liking instead of pizza sauce since stromboli is versatile. You can use white pizza, marinara, BBQ, or chipotle sauce. You can get creative, and the stromboli will not disappoint.

Pepperoni- I have used chicken pepperoni for this recipe. You can use any pepperoni of your liking, and if you want your pepperoni to be crispy, you could fry it in the pan for 2-3 minutes and then place it inside the stromboli. Ensure not to get it too crispy, or it will crumble while you wrap up the stromboli dough.

Cheese- Cheese gives stromboli that nice, milky, and creamy texture. I have used mozzarella cheese for this recipe, but I highly recommend combining mozzarella with another cheese to add more flavor to the stromboli.

Mozarella+cheddar or mozzarella+cheese slices would be an exciting add-on to a stromboli, and I think I need to try the one with cheese slices. Going all out with cheese cannot go wrong in a stromboli.

How to make Stromboli Recipe with Pizza Dough?

Making Stromboli is easy; follow these steps, and you will end up with the most gorgeous-looking Stromboli.

1. Roll out your pizza dough into a square shape and make sure you have the dough a little thick on the edges so it is easy to roll over and fold.

2. Now spread some pizza sauce and layer with pepperoni. You can add as much as pepperoni as you want. Leave some space on the sides and at the end where you will tuck in the stromboli.

3. Layer with cheese, which is the last layer of toppings.

4. Now, we will roll and tuck the entire stromboli.

Start rolling from one end and go towards the other end(where you have left some extra space). If you have issues making the dough close on the other end, you can wet your fingers with water, press the dough’s edge, and tightly tuck the stromboli.

I pinched the other two edges and tucked them at the bottom of the stromboli.

You can even tuck the edges in the beginning before you start rolling, and then you won’t have to deal with pinching the edges at the end. Leave 1/2 inch space from all four corners to do this.

5. Brush the top of the Stromboli with some egg wash and cook it in the convection oven for about 25 minutes at 200°C.

You can even make cuts on top of the stromboli to let the air go in and out and cook the stromboli evenly.

The stromboli looked perfect and was ready to slice into with a knife.

Different Stromboli Stuffing combinations

I love trying out different stuffing combinations with stromboli, and here are some of my favorite stuffing combinations that I have come across-

1. All Veggie Stuffing- Finely chop bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms, and cook them in butter with salt and pepper. Once it is slightly soft, let it cook and use it with some pizza marinara sauce or white pizza sauce.

2. Ham and cheese- Another great combination is ham and cheese. Add provolone and mozzarella cheese to this combination to get the maximum flavor.

3. Sausage+ Pepperoni+ Cheese- This is another combo I like; you can add pizza sauce and then top it with cooked sausage slices and some pepperoni and cheese. It gives a nice, meaty flavor to the stromboli, making it one of the best combos on the list.

4. BBQ Chicken Stromboli- Another great combo is shredded BBQ chicken with BBQ sauce, mozzarella cheese, and gouda cheese.

5. Buffalo Chicken Stromboli- Buffalo chicken with white pizza sauce, finely chopped onion, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese.

How to serve?

You can serve Stromboli with Marinara sauce or this cheese dip that takes no more than 5 minutes to make.

You can even serve it with chili garlic sauce or a sweet chili garlic dip. The Stromboli is going to taste great with a variety of different dip options.

What is the difference between Stromboli and Calzone?

Calzone is like a pocket filled with meat, cheese, and pizza sauce. On the other hand, Stromboli is like a rolled-up pizza sheet.

Stromboli looks like pizza when laid flat, but you roll it up like a burrito and cook it in the oven.

Calzone is made with a circular dough sheet where you layer pizza sauce, cheese, and meat on half of the dough and close the other half on top of it.

Calzones are also fun to make and eat, so you should try making them. But for now, check out this quick recap on the stromboli recipe-

Equipment

  • 1 Convention Oven
  • 1 Rolling Pin

Ingredients

  • 250 grams Pizza Dough ball
  • 3 tbsp Pizza Sauce
  • 25 grams Pepperoni Slices
  • 1-1/2 cup Cheese

Instructions

  • Take the dough and roll it out in a square shape using a rolling pin. Keep the edges slightly thicker as it helps while wrapping the stromboli.
  • Now Layer the dough with pizza sauce, pepperoni and cheese. You can use ham, sausage or any other filling you like but in this recipe I have used pepperoni and cheese as my filling. Make sure to leave some space from all four edges so that it gets easier to roll it up.
  • Roll the dough and then pinch of the edges and fold it and press it on the sides to seal the stromboli. Massage it to remove any marks from the side. It kind of takes the shape of a baguette.
  • You can make cut marks on top of it, I forgot to do that but it would be better if you did.
  • Brush some egg wash on top of the stromboli.
  • Place it in the oven at 200°C for 20-25 minutes. The Stromboli is ready.
