Spicy Garlic Mushroom Pizza

If you like garlic and mushrooms, this Spicy Garlic Mushroom Pizza will be your favorite! I’ve brought out the garlicky flavor by cooking the mushrooms in garlic oil and adding some chilies for a little heat.

You can skip the chilies if you want, but I think they give the recipe the perfect kick. If you don’t have fresh green chilies, you can even use chili oil—it works just as well.

This recipe combines cheesy goodness from mozzarella cheese with spicy garlic mushrooms on a crispy crust, and honestly, there’s nothing to hate about it.

I love eating these garlic mushrooms on their own, and that’s how I came up with the idea of using them as a pizza topping. And let me tell you, it turned out so good! My family loved it, too, which is always a bonus.

So, without wasting any more time, let me share my Spicy Garlic Mushroom Pizza recipe with you!

Ingredients

1. Pizza Dough

The first thing you need to make a pizza is pizza dough! For this recipe, I used my 72-hour pizza dough recipe, which gives a beautifully formed crust.

I baked it in my regular home oven, so you won’t see the leopard spotting on top of the crust like you would if you baked it in a pizza oven, such as an Ooni or any other outdoor wood-fired pizza oven.

I just used my simple countertop oven, which doesn’t give the leopard crust, but the result was still equally airy and pretty good! If you want a nice crust, try my 72-hour pizza dough recipe.

If that sounds too much work, you can go for a simpler 2-hour pizza dough recipe or even Bobby Flay’s pizza dough recipe—both are much easier options.

And hey, if making homemade pizza dough isn’t your thing, no worries! You can totally use store-bought dough for this. It’ll still turn out great!

2. Mushrooms

For this recipe, I used button mushrooms—about 9 to 10 of them. The exact amount you’ll need depends on the size of your pizza. I made a pizza that’s somewhere between small and medium—not exactly medium, but not quite small either.

So, if you’re making a larger pizza than mine, you’ll want to use a few extra mushrooms.

For a medium pizza, add a couple more mushrooms, and if you’re making a large pizza, I’d suggest doubling the mushroom quantity. You’ll need a lot of mushrooms to ensure every bite is loaded with that delicious garlicky mushroom flavor!

3. Garlic

For this recipe, I used about 7 to 8 cloves of garlic—yep, that much garlic! Honestly, garlic is almost like another topping here, and trust me, it’s amazing when you use a lot of it.

If you’re not as into garlic as I am, you can cut it down to 4 or 5 cloves. But personally, I love using 7 to 8 large cloves. If your garlic cloves are on the smaller side, feel free to bump it up to 10 to 12.

I finely chop the garlic cloves so they blend well with the mushrooms when I cook them together. I highly recommend chopping them finely or using a mortar and pestle to crush them into a chunky paste.

That way, you’ll get a nice, bold garlic flavor. Just don’t toss them in a food processor—it tends to mess with the taste and makes the garlic lose that fresh punch!

4. Olive Oil

I cook the garlic, mushrooms, and chilies in olive oil, and that’s why you’ll need it for this recipe. I used about 3 tablespoons of olive oil, which I think was just right for 12 medium-sized button mushrooms (chopped).

You can use a little more if you like, depending on how oily you want your mushrooms, but 3 tablespoons worked perfectly for me.

5. Salt

I always add salt at the end, after cooking the mushrooms. This is super important because adding salt too early can make the mushrooms release all their water and turn rubbery.

I prefer my mushrooms to have a juicy, slight crunch when you bite into them, rather than being soggy and sloppy. So, trust me on this—save the salt for the end!

6. Green Chilies

I used two medium-sized green chilies for this recipe. You can use any other chili you like, but I love these green chilies because they add freshness and heat. Adjust the quantity or try different chilies based on your spice preference if you want to experiment!

Tips to Make Spicy Garlic Mushroom Pizza

1. Preheat Your Oven: Always preheat your oven before baking pizza. I preheat mine at 200°C (about 390°F) for 15 minutes to make sure it’s nice and hot before the pizza goes in.

If you’re using a pizza steel, you’ll need to preheat it along with the oven for 20–25 minutes.

In this recipe, I cook the pizza base on a cast iron pan on the stovetop first. Once the base is ready, I top it with sauce, cheese, and mushrooms, then bake it in my countertop pizza oven.

2. Cast Iron vs. Pizza Steel: Personally, I prefer my cast iron pan. It saves me time because I don’t need to preheat the oven repeatedly.

I just cook the pizza base on the stovetop, transfer the pan to the oven, and bake for 10–15 minutes. With a pizza steel, you need to preheat it again for 5–10 minutes between pizzas, which can be a bit time-consuming.

Plus, sliding a pizza onto a steel takes some practice—so if that’s not your thing, cast iron might be a better choice for you. That said, pizza steel gives amazing results too, so go with whatever works best for you!

3. Cook the Toppings First: This step is non-negotiable. You need to cook the garlic, chilies, and mushrooms in a pan before adding them as toppings.

Don’t just toss them raw onto the pizza and bake—it won’t have the same depth of flavor. Cooking them in a pan ensures that the garlic and chili flavors infuse into the mushrooms, giving you that perfect spicy, garlicky topping.

4. Pizza Sauce Options: You can use either red pizza sauce or white garlic pizza sauce for this recipe.

I’ve shared both sauce recipes on my blog, so feel free to check them out! While the white pizza sauce pairs beautifully with this recipe, I tried it with my classic red pizza sauce, and it tasted absolutely divine. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

5. Pizza Screen Alternative: If you don’t have a pizza steel or a cast iron pan, a pizza screen works great too! I’ve been experimenting with one lately, and it gives a nice, crispy crust.

Just make sure to first cook the pizza on the lower rack setting(in an OTG), then finish off by cooking the top and bottom for a few more minutes to get a crispy base and a perfectly cooked top.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams Pizza Dough
  • 10 Button Mushrooms
  • 6-7 Garlic Cloves
  • 3 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 tbsp Pizza Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Flour(to stretch the dough)
  • 2 pieces Green Chili

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil into pan, then add the chilies and garlic. Sauté for a while, but make sure not to brown the garlic. The garlic should remain white or slightly golden, but not brown—be careful not to burn it. Once the oil becomes fragrant, add the mushrooms to the pan.
  • Saute the mushrooms for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once they’re done, add a pinch of salt, switch off the heat, and transfer the mushrooms to a clean bowl. This ensures they stop cooking as soon as transferred to a bowl.
  • Stretch the pizza dough and place it on a hot(extremely hot) cast iron pan. Heat the cast iron pan on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes to get the base crispy and swift off the heat.
  • Spread the sauce evenly over the dough. Add a generous layer of mozzarella cheese, followed by the mushroom topping. Sprinkle a little more mozzarella on top to hold the toppings together as it melts.
  • Transfer the pan to a preheated oven(preheated at 200°C for atleast 15 minutes) and bake the pizza at 190°C for about 10 minutes. If the pizza is thicker, it may take a little longer—just keep an eye on it and bake until the crust is cooked through and has a nice golden color.
  • Once done, take the pizza out of the oven and garnish it with finely chopped spring onions, if you’d like. Slice the pizza into pieces and enjoy.

Notes

1. Preheat the Oven-
Always preheat your oven before placing the pizza inside. This ensures even cooking and helps the pizza crust bake properly.
2. Choose Your Cooking Surface-
You can cook your pizza on a cast iron pan, a pizza stone, or a pizza screen. The choice is completely yours, depending on the tools you have and the crust style you prefer.
3. Prepare the Cast Iron Pan-
If using a cast iron pan, season it with a small amount of oil before placing the pizza dough on it. This prevents sticking and helps create a crisp, golden crust.
Heat the oil until it’s warm, but don’t overdo it—just enough to coat the surface. Never place pizza dough on a cold, unseasoned pan, as it will stick and won’t crisp up properly.
4. Heat the Pan Before Adding Dough-
Make sure the cast iron pan is hot before placing the pizza dough on it.
Once the dough is on, you can adjust it slightly to fit the pan, but do this carefully to avoid tearing.
The heat from the pan will help the base cook evenly and give you that beautiful crispy texture.
5. Don’t Skip the Preheat for Crispy Results-
Whether using a cast iron pan or another surface, heating it up first ensures the dough starts cooking immediately when it touches the pan, creating a perfect, crispy base.
