Easy Caramelized Onion Pizza Recipe
While trying out this caramelized onion pizza, I just knew it was a recipe I had to share with all of you!
If you’re a fan of onions, especially caramelized ones, you’re going to fall head over heels for this easy and flavorful pizza.
Caramelized onions have this magical ability to elevate any dish—they’re amazing on burgers, and I was pleasantly surprised by how perfectly they pair with pizza.
What I love most is that this recipe is simple. You can caramelize a big batch of onions, store them in the fridge, and have them ready to go anytime you’re craving this pizza.
I’ve shared my go-to recipe for caramelized onions in case you need it, but if you already know how to make them, feel free to skip that part and jump straight into making the pizza!
This caramelized onion pizza has become a favorite in my family. They keep asking, “When are you making it again?” I think it’s perfect for special occasions like Christmas or Thanksgiving, but honestly, it’s just as good for a simple dinner at home.
The kids love it, and it works great as a snack or appetizer too. Pair it with some drinks, and it’s always a hit!
If you love pizza, you should definitely give this a try for your family and friends.
It’s super simple to make, and if you’re short on time, you can even use store-bought caramelized onions. Either way, it’s so good, and I know you’ll want to make it again and again!
Ingredients
Caramelized Onions – I used my own caramelized onion recipe, which you can find linked here. The caramelized onions add a rich, sweet-savory flavor to the pizza that makes it stand out.
Pizza Dough – For the dough, I used my homemade 2-ingredient pizza dough recipe. It worked perfectly, but you can always use store-bought dough if you prefer a quicker option.
Mozzarella Cheese – I went with classic mozzarella for that perfect melt and stretch. However, feel free to experiment with other cheese blends. You can use a mix of mozzarella and any other cheese you like to suit your taste.
Pizza Sauce – I used a classic homemade red pizza sauce because I had some in the fridge. But, you can switch it up! A creamy white pizza sauce would complement the caramelized onions beautifully, or you can try buffalo sauce for a bold, tangy twist. The choice is totally up to you!
How to make Easy Caramelized Onion Pizza
Roll out the pizza dough – Start by rolling out the pizza dough to a desired thickness. I prefer a slightly thicker crust, but feel free to go thinner if that’s your style.
Spread the pizza sauce – Next, spread a layer of your chosen pizza sauce (either red, white, or buffalo sauce) evenly over the rolled-out dough.
I have used red pizza sauce but you can choose white or buffalo too and this pizza would taste amazing.
Add a layer of mozzarella cheese – Sprinkle a thin layer of mozzarella cheese on the sauce.
This cheese forms the base layer that will melt and blend with the sauce and also I usually follow this layering so that if I use any high moisture topping, it wont make the pizza base soggy.
Spread the caramelized onions – Now, add your caramelized onions as the next layer. Spread them evenly over the cheese for that delicious sweet-savory flavor.
Add more mozzarella cheese – Sprinkle another layer of mozzarella cheese on top of the caramelized onions. This will help everything melt together perfectly and give the pizza that gooey texture.
Preheat your oven – Preheat the convection oven to 200°C (about 400°F) for 10-15 minutes. I usually preheat for 10 minutes, but make sure you give it enough time to reach the right temperature.
(Note: I accidentally left mine in a bit longer during my last attempt, so be careful not to overdo it, in case you do then shorten the cooking time by a 2-3 minutes!)
Baking the pizza – Place the pizza in the oven and bake it for around 16-17 minutes. Keep an eye on it after the 15-minute mark.
The pizza cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your crust. For a thicker crust, it will take closer to 17 minutes, but for a thinner crust, you might be done in 14-15 minutes.
Enjoy! – Once the pizza is golden brown and bubbly, take it out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Then, slice it up and enjoy!
My family absolutely loved this caramelized onion pizza. It was gone in just five minutes, and everyone’s already asking when I’ll make it again.
