There are so many different kinds of cheese out there that it can get a little confusing on what type of cheese goes really well on a pizza. If you are someone who wants to know more about the different kinds of cheese on pizza and their textures and taste then you have come to the right post.
Being a pizza enthusiast myself, I have tried making pizza with several different kinds of cheese and there were a few hits and a misses but it is always fun to try something new rather than going with the same type of cheese every time I cook a pizza.
There are many who use a cheese mix so basically, they would mix two or three different kinds of cheese and spread that on top of their pies before they put it inside the oven.
The ratio fo the mix can vary based on the liking and taste of a person. Some of the most common mixes use Provolone Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, and cheddar cheese.

This is the most common pizza cheese used and most of the time, people only use Mozarella cheese alone. The cheese in itself is very stringy and this is the cheese responsible for giving you that stretch on your pizza that you are used to seeing in ads of pizza hut or dominos.
However, using this cheese alone can make the pizza very bland and personally I never use this cheese alone.
I prefer mixing it with provolone or cheddar so that I get their flavourful taste.
If you have fresh Mozarella on your side then you can go for it alone.
Fresh Mozzarella tastes FAR better than the ones that you get in the supermarket.
So, if you get your hands on that then you can use it alone and it would add some flavor but others using it in a mix is a better option.
The different kinds of Mozarella
1. Fresh Mozarella
This is the kind of cheese that can give your pizza a whole lot of flavor. You get it in a deli and these are freshly made. You can easily break the cheese with your hands and place it on the pizza.
The cheese melts when heated and gives a really nice flavor and you would see people using it a lot on classic Neopolitan pizzas. This is the cheese that is used to make a classic Margherita pizza so delicious.
If you are not going for the pull or the stretch then you might be interested in going for the Fresh Mozarella cheese as it comes with a lot of flavors.
You can use the full fat Mozarella Cheese or the skim one but either way the cheese is way more flavourful than the other variant of the Mozarella Cheese that you get in supermarkets.
2. Mozzarella Cheese on the Cheese Isle
If you are going for some frozen or shredded Mozarella cheese then you are going for the classic cheese that would be almost tasteless and of a stringy consistency.
Most of the Mozarella cheese blocks that you find in supermarkets are not that great and I would highly suggest that you go for a mix of different types of cheese in order to get a perfect flavor.
I would highly suggest Mozarella cheese from the Deli but if you are into the stretchy cheese consistency then getting shredded cheese or a normal Mozarallea cheese block from the supermarket would do the trick.
This is a flavourful cheese as it is an Italian cheese that is aged so that it gets the flavor. There are some Provolone cheeses that are smoked and depending on how it is aged you can get different textures and flavors in this pizza.
The cheese is smooth and cuts without crumbling which makes this cheese ideal for sandwiches and other dishes as well.
The cheese can be mild sweet to sharp pungent, depending on how long it has been aged.
The best part about adding Provolone Cheese in your pizza is that you are going to get a lot of flavors and depending on how aged you like the Provolone to be, you can add it in the mix accordingly.
I would suggest mixing this cheese with Mozarella cheese as these two kinds of cheese give you a perfect blend of a pizza.
There are so many people who like mixing Mozarella, Provolone, and Cheddar cheese in order to get the perfect cheese mix.
Cheddar cheese has an amazing sharp taste that it renders to the pizza. It is best to use this cheese in combination with other cheeses as the cheddar cheese alone can be very overpowering on a pizza.
You might want to tone it down by mixing it with cheese like Mozarella that has a mild flavor.
Cheddar cheese tastes amazing when it is used in a cheese mix as it gives an excellent cheesy taste to the pizza.
If you want to get a nice deep orange color on your pizza, you could then use cheddar cheese as well since it would give your pizza a nice orange color.
Most of them prefer using Cheddar, Provolone and Mozarella cheese blend on a pizza and I prefer the same as well.
You can play along with the ratios and get a taste that best suits your needs.
Parmesan cheese is a hard block of cheese and it is relatively dry in texture.
The cheese has a soft creamy taste and it usually goes on top of a dish when it has been cooked completely.
Now generally I never use Parmesan cheese while cooking a pizza but if you really want to use this cheese then you can sprinkle the shaving on top of a cooked pizza.
The reason cooking with this cheese is going to ruin its taste because the taste of this cheese is very delicate.
Parmesan cheese tastes amazing when you just sprinkle it on top of a dish but cooking with it feels a little pointless especially when you are cooking it with pizza.
Gouda Cheese is one of the soft and flavourful cheese that you can find out there. The cheese does not melt like any of the cheeses mentioned above and that is the reason it is not used in making a pizza.
If you are interested in trying out Gouda cheese with pizza then you can do so but it does not really change in texture or add more flavor(in comparison to other cheeses mentioned above) when cooked with your pie.
However, there are a few toppings that go really well with this cheese and you can try cooking with it but overall, I think Provolone or Cheddar Cheese gives you more flavor when used with Mozarella.
You can use it with onions and other vegetables on your pizza but I would rather use Provolone or other cheese instead but that’s my preference.

Ricotta Cheese is creamy, soft and white in color with an amazing texture. Usually, you can use this cheese on the base so that it would melt and give you a creamy and nice texture on the pizza.
While having a slice your mouth is going to fill up with all the goodness of cheese and you are going to really enjoy having this cheese with some meat toppings especially shrimp or chicken.
I usually love this cheese when I want to add some chicken and vegetables on my pizza or even some shrimp.
Ricotta can really give you a nice creamy cheese pizza and if you really want to try this cheese alone then you could do that as well.
The soft ricotta cheese gives a nice flavor to the pizza and you are going to love how you get a rich creamy flavor with every bite you take.
Cream cheese can be best used on top of pizza or when the pizza is done as these cheeses tend to burn if you cook them along with the pizza.
If you want a nice and creamy pizza then you can spread some cream cheese once your pizza is done and you are going to get a nice flavor.
I would never include cream cheese on my pizza as there are so much better cheese options out there, however, you can do so if that interests you.
So which is the best Cheese on a Pizza?
Usually, I use a cheese mix of Mozarella Cheese, Provolone cheese and Cheddar cheese. The mix of these three kinds of cheese is going to bring a lot of flavor in your pizza and you are going to enjoy the taste a lot.
If you are trying to just use one cheese and keep it minimalistic then you can go for Deli Mozarella cheese as that is the best kind of cheese out there that you can use on your pizza.
