Ingredients and Substitutions

250 grams of Pizza Dough- I used leftover pizza dough for this recipe, but store-bought pizza dough works just as well. Many people have used Pillsbury pizza dough, and it works great too. Just make sure you’re using pizza dough specifically, as getting that rise for the perfect texture is important.

Pizza sauce—You can use any pizza sauce for this recipe. I used homemade pizza sauce, but you can also use store-bought or canned pizza sauce. As long as you like the flavor of the pizza sauce, you can feel free to use it while making these pepperoni pizza rolls.

Pepperoni SlicesI have layered the pizza dough with pepperoni slices as the topping, but you can add any other toppings you like. However, since this is a pepperoni pizza roll recipe, it’s important to include pepperoni for that classic flavor. Plus, the pepperoni adds a nice aesthetic to the rolls, making them look as good as they taste

How to make Pepperoni Pizza Rolls?

Prepare the Pizza Dough: Roll the pizza dough to 1/4 inch thick, using dry flour to avoid sticking to the surface. I recommend you have the dough slightly thick to puff up while cooking and give the pepperoni pizza pinwheels a nice texture.

Spread the Sauce and Add Toppings: Layer the pizza sauce on the rolled-out dough, leaving a small space on the edges. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese on the sauce, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese(optional). Arrange the sliced pepperoni evenly over the cheese. Sprinkle the garlic powder, dried oregano, and dried basil over the pepperoni(optional).

Roll Up the Dough: Roll the dough into a log, like a roll-up, starting from one of the long sides. Once rolled, pinch the seam to seal the edge. Place the rolled dough seam down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Chill the Roll: Place the baking sheet with the rolled dough in the freezer for 1-2 hours or until firm. This will make cutting the dough into pieces easier and then baking it.

Slice: Remove the dough from the freezer and cut it into 1-inch thick rounds using a sharp knife. Let it sit out for about 15 minutes, and in this time, preheat your oven or air fryer at 200°C for about 15 minutes. If you cook it straight away, it will not rise as well when cooked.

Bake: Arrange the sliced pinwheels or pizza rolls on a tray. Brush the tops of the pinwheels with olive oil. Bake them in an oven for 12-15 minutes at 190°C in the oven or until the pinwheels are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Once done, remove the pizza rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally, with additional pizza sauce for dipping.

Dipping Sauces for Pepperoni Pizza Rolls

These are some of the famous dipping sauces that one can use for pepperoni pizza rolls.

  1. Marinara Sauce: Classic tomato tanginess.
  2. Garlic Parmesan Sauce: Creamy and savory richness.
  3. Ranch Dressing: Cool and creamy contrast.
  4. Buffalo Sauce: Tangy and spicy kick.
  5. Honey Mustard: Sweet and tangy twist.
  6. Cheesy Dip

Recipe FAQ’s

1. How do I slice the dough for the pepperoni pizza roll?
You have to chill the dough for at least 2 hours before you can slice it into the dough and make pizza rolls out of it.

2. How long should I let the dough sit out at room temperature?
Once you have cut the frozen log of the pizza roll, leave the pizza rolls at room temperature for not more than 15-20 minutes. Just make sure it is not extremely cold so that it gets easier for it to rise when cooked in the oven.

3. What will happen if I cook the dough straight from the freezer?
If you cook the dough straight from the freezer, the pizza rolls will cook dry and hard, which won’t be fun. It would be best to let the pizza rolls sit out for a while and then bake them in the oven at the said temperature for the given time.

4. How long do I bake the pizza rolls in the oven?
You bake them at 200°C for 15- 20 minutes or cook them for 5 minutes so the pepperoni pizza rolls cook to perfection.

5. How can I tell if the pinwheels can be removed from the oven?
Once the pinwheels are golden brown, you can remove them from the oven. You can see the tops of the pinwheels and whether they have gotten all golden brown, and then it is done.

Equipment

  • 1 Convection oven

Ingredients

  • 250 grams Pizza dough
  • 5 tbsp Pizza sauce
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese
  • 10 Slices Pepperoni

Instructions

  • Roll out a pizza dough to 1/4 inch thickness, using a light dusting of flour to prevent sticking. I recommend keeping the dough slightly thick to allow for puffing during baking, giving the pepperoni pizza pinwheels a light, airy, yet crispy outside texture.
  • Evenly layer the pizza sauce onto the rolled-out dough, leaving a small space along the edges. Layer shredded mozzarella cheese over the pizza sauce. Arrange sliced pepperoni evenly over the cheese, and sprinkle garlic powder, dried oregano, and dried basil over the pepperoni(this is optional).
  • Starting from a long side, roll up the dough into a log(just like a burrito, stuffing the toppings inside using a spoon if they spill out), similar to a roll-up sandwich. Pinch the seam to seal the edge, then place the rolled dough seam on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Place the baking sheet with the rolled dough in the freezer for 1-2 hours, or until the dough firms up. Chilling makes it easier to slice the dough into pieces before baking.
  • Remove the dough from the freezer and cut it into 1-inch thick rounds using a sharp knife. Allow the slices to sit out for 10-15 minutes while you preheat oven at 200°C for 15 minutes.
  • Arrange the sliced pinwheels on a baking tray and brush the top with olive oil or butter. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes at 190°C, or until the pinwheels turn golden brown and the cheese melts and becomes bubbly.
  • Once baked, remove the pizza rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally providing additional pizza sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
