Wooden Pizza Peels vs Metal Pizza Peels

Using a pizza peel is pretty easy but if you are a beginner then you might wonder which pizza peel is a better option?

The wooden pizza peel or the metal pizza peel? If you are interested in knowing which pizza peel is the best while making a pizza then you are at the right post.

In this article, we would discuss both the pizza peels and find out which one is better than the other.

Wooden Pizza Peels

Wooden Pizza peels are ideal for putting the pizza inside the oven as the pizza dough barely sticks on the wooden pizza peel.

It would take quite some time for the dough to stick to the wooden peel hence giving you more time to work on the pizza and then put it inside the oven.

If you are a beginner then you would find the wooden pizza peels very useful as it is really easy to transfer the pizza from the wooden peel onto the oven.

The pizza dough barely sticks to the peel making things easier.

If you keep the pizza dough on the wooden peel for a long time then it is eventually going to stick to the peel.

So, make sure you do not take a lot of time to spread the sauce and place the toppings on your pizza.

The wooden peel is not the best choice when it comes to using it while you need to take the pizza out of the oven or turn the pizza inside the oven.

Since the wooden peels are thicker, it can be difficult to lift a cooked pizza and place it on top of the peel.

It is better if you use a thinner peel and that is where arises the need for the next peel that we are going to discuss.

Metal Peel

Metal Peels are thinner and hence they are excellent for turning around the pizza inside the oven and even retrieving the pizza once it is completely cooked.

You can use a metal peel even when you want to insert the pizza inside the oven, just make sure that you have dusted the peel with flour and semolina mixture so that the pizza can easily slide inside the oven.

It can be a learning curve for a beginner but you will get used to it once you have done it a couple of times with the peel.

You can just invest in this one peel as it does it all! You can insert the pizza, turn it around inside the oven and remove it when done just by using the metal pizza peel.

So, if you do not want to invest in multiple pizza peels then getting just the metal one should get the job done.

Cleaning the metallic pizza peel is very easy as all that you need to do is use some dish soap water and scrub.

Maintenance of the metallic peel is easier than the wooden peel so you might want to consider this before you buy one for yourself.

Turning pizza peels

This pizza peel is a metal pizza peel but it has a slightly different design. It comes with a turning wheel on the end that is used to turn around the pizzas.

The turning peel is useful when you want to turn around the pizzas inside the oven without removing it out.

These peels are necessary for someone who is using a large wood-fired pizza oven and is cooking multiple pizzas at the same time.

Personally, if you want a peel just to use at home for a small oven like the Ooni Pro or the Roccbox then a metal peel should do the trick.

If you want to speed up the cooking then you can go ahead and invest in a turning peel as well.
