Traeger has been a pioneer in creating smart grills. The Ironwood and Timberline grill series are two of the best lines coming from Traeger and they do not disappoint in any way.
They can produce beautifully-smoked meats and grill marks on any food you cook in them. They are also very easy to use and they can be controlled manually or via your phone.
Despite their same capabilities for cooking any type of food, there are some features that are helpful in making the food better which both of the grill series do not always have the same.
So with this post, we seek to help you in differentiating these two grill series by mentioning the features and benefits that you can get from one grill but the other does not have.
We will see which one is better when it comes to cooking and control as well as other functions. The similarities are undeniable, which we will also mention but we will be highlighting the differences.
They can certainly impress any pitmaster with their performance. They are also great for beginners as they are very easy to use and can help you perfect any recipe in no time.
So if you are interested in investing with either of these two grill series, then go ahead as they will be the best grills you have ever purchased.
If you want to know more about them, then read along as we give you our experience when using these two amazing grills and make you see how they are similar and different from each other.
First, the Set-Up
This is one of the similarities between these two grill series and the other models from Traeger. They all come with an easy guide that you can follow when setting up these grills.
One thing you should consider when setting up these grills is that you will need an electrical outlet. This is to make the remote control option and ignition work well.
The most plausible option with this is to bring out an extension cord. This way, you have the electricity that the grills need while you keep them far from the house and flammable objects.
They can get up to very high temperatures so you need to set up the grills far from any object that will burn easily. You are going to need some help in lifting up these grills as well.
The grills weigh over hundreds of pounds so instead of risking injuries, find a few helping hands to move the grills to a safer space before firing them up.
You do not need to worry about any outdoor element as the grills are made with high-quality materials that are resistant to rain, sunlight, rust, and corrosion so you can leave them outside.
Significant Differences Between The Ironwood and Timberline Series
As we have told you already, these two grill series from Traeger does have their major differences. You can see those in the size of the grills and other features.
This means that they also differ in performance in some ways. So let us start with the simplest and most obvious difference between the two grill series.
The Ironwood grill series offers two different sizes for you to choose from. One is the Ironwood 650 and the other is the Ironwood 885, which both have the same functionality.
Timberline offers the same number of grills for the series. It has the Timberline 850 and the Timberline 1300 which is a very large space for cooking multiple foods at the same time.
The number of Traeger grills indicates their size in square inches. So as you can see, the Traeger Timberline grill series offers more space for cooking.
The reason behind this is the pill-shaped chambers of the grills. This is also the same design as the Ironwood grill series but the Timberline grills have bulkier chambers.
The Timberline grills have enough space to put 3 racks of grill grates in the chamber. The racks are also totally adjustable to make space for bigger foods while keeping others warm in the grill.
The Ironwood series, since they have the same pill-shaped chambers, are also able to put adjustable racks inside them but they are limited to 2 racks only.
Brushless DC Motors
Another advantage of the Traeger Timberline series is that it has a more efficient motor to make the auger work. It saves a lot of energy and can drive the pellets faster when needed.
The brushes on the earlier models such as the Ironwood grills help in cleaning the pathway of the pellets so they can move properly when they are being transferred to the firebox.
However, there is a slight problem with this as they often become the obstruction themselves. Pellets have a hard time moving with the brushes when they are all clumped up.
That is why they installed the brushless DC motors in the Timberline grills. This allows the motor to work faster while using less electricity while delivering the pellets more efficiently.
This makes the Timberline grills less likely to get clogged so the pellets will surely arrive at the firebox when needed. The Ironwood grills would be better if they have these motors.
Aside from the size of the cooking chamber, the Timberline series also takes over the size of the pellet hopper, it can handle more pellets than the Ironwood grills.
The biggest pellet hopper of the Timberline grills has a capacity of 24 pounds. The Ironwood only has a 20-pound limit which is enough but it can certainly be improved.
However, when it comes to efficiency, Traeger made sure that the pellet hoppers and firebox of the grills can reduce the usage of pellets on both grill series without reducing the power.
The average pellet usage of the Ironwood and Timberline grills is 2 pounds per hour. This means that the Ironwood can last for 10 hours with full pellets and 12 hours for the Timberline.
Downdraft Exhaust System
Another difference between the Timberline and Ironwood series from other grills is their exhaust system. Traeger did not put chimneys on these grills so they function differently.
The downdraft exhaust system is an innovative design that helps the grills put more smoky flavor in the meat or any food that you are cooking inside the chamber.
The firebox of the Timberline and Ironwood grills is found at the bottom of the chamber. The exhaust is also placed at the bottom so the heat enters and escapes in the same area.
This also means that the smoke that the grills produce will not go out of the grills unless it has rolled over the food that you are cooking. It circles in the chamber before going back down.
This is only possible if the lid of the grills is closed. The closed lid and the pill-shaped chamber create a vortex where the smoke rolls at least once on the food before exiting at the bottom.
TurboTemp and Sensors
These are features that are found on the TImberline. The TurboTemp is a combination of the PID controllers and the brushless motors to produce heat efficiently.
This is a feature that allows the TImberline to combine the great insulation and quick ignition of the pellets in order to reach the desired temperature faster than most models.
The Ironwood grills do have the ability to produce the same temperature but it takes them longer, usually. This is because the pellets are slowed down by the brushes in their motors
The Timberline grills are also able to notify you when you have limited pellets left on the hopper. You can be notified through your phone or by a beep on the machine when it needs to be refilled.
The Ironwood grills do not have the indicators when the pellets are running low so you will need to keep an eye on that. However, the pellets can last long so refilling it will not be a frequent job.
Cooking in the Grills
One thing that amazes us is the ability of the grills to cook with the same precision and quality of finishes on the food despite having so many differences in the features.
So basically, comparing the cooking capabilities of the Timberline and Ironwood grill series all comes down to the ease of use and functionality under different conditions.
The WiFire feature of these two grill series is really great. When you are smoking meat, it takes a long time for it to finish so it is nice to have some indicators when the grills need something.
You can sit back and watch your favorite shows while the grills are cooking. The mobile app will let you know if the grills need more pellets to raise the temperature and vice versa.
Controlling them through your smartphone is also a lot easier. You do not need to stand beside the heat that the grills produce as you can see the accurate temperature on your phone.
Cooking in the Grills (TRU Convection and SuperSmoke)
The grills also have the TRU Convection feature which is very useful in creating an evenly-heated chamber. It makes use of the pill-shaped chamber and the variable speed fan.
When you use this feature, you can see the difference in the finishes of the food. They come out evenly cooked as the grills do not produce hot or cold spots inside.
The grills from the same series can get up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit which sears meat perfectly and can cook pizzas in just 10 minutes or less.
The Timberline grills also have an advantage over the Ironwood when you want to sear meat. The bottom rack of the Timberline grills can be lowered to the flames.
The Timberline grills are also able to smoke meat better. They have the widest temperature range of all grills from Traeger.
The temperature range of the Timberline grills is at 165 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. This means it can produce enough heat for searing meat and low temperatures for smoking meats perfectly.
The SuperSmoke feature of the grills is also helpful in infusing smoky flavors on your food. This is a feature that suddenly lowers the temperature to create more smoke.
The smoke is then blasted into the chamber to be infused into the food. It turns the fanning system off so the smoke stays in the chamber for far longer than it used to.
The Timberline grill series has great features that really help you cook better and easier. It allows you to spend more time with your family even when you are cooking.
This goes with the Ironwood series as well. It can cook with the same quality and can let you get better results compared to grills from other brands.
The main difference between these two grill series is the size. You can get more cooking space with the Timberline grills than the Ironwood grills.
That is also why the Timberline grills are more expensive than the Ironwood grills. They cost hundreds of dollars more because of the size and quality of the grills.
So if ever you are going to invest in grills, take your time to determine what factors will affect your purchase. If you will be cooking for one small family, then the Ironwood grills are better.
But if you like having parties and gatherings with groups of people, you can purchase the Timberline grills since they offer more space for cooking.
