Best Crispy Thin Crust Pizza Dough Recipe
Making The Dough
- 1 cup of water
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 4 grams of instant yeast
- Half teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
Step 1: Mix The Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and yeast, and then use a spoon to whisk the ingredients together until the ingredients are evenly distributed before adding the wet ingredients.
Note: if you do not know the measurements of the ingredients, the rule of thumb is to add 1 portion of water in two parts flour. You also need to add the ingredients in different stages.
Step 2: Mix The Wet Ingredients
Create a well in the middle of the flour mixture by pushing the dry ingredients with a spoon to the side.
Slowly add water by using only one-third of the cup of water and then mix it.
Use a spoon or a rubber spatula to mix the flour into the water.
Form a ball with the mixture and then slowly add another one-third of the water to make the dough firmer and stickier.
The remaining one-third should be poured in two parts to adjust to the stickiness of the dough, the finished product should be sticky but can be rolled in your hands if you damp your hands.
Step 3: Knead The Dough
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and then start kneading by hand for 8 to 10 minutes.
Do not put too much flour on the work surface as it will mess up the consistency of the dough.
You can also use a mixer to make the process faster. Place the dough in a mixer bowl and then knead it for 5 minutes, there is no need to stretch the dough too much at this point.
Step 4: Let It Rise
After making a huge ball of dough, use a pastry scraper to cut the ball of dough into two.
Roll each ball in your hands and make a smaller ball before coating it with a thin layer of olive oil.
Cover each ball with cling wrap and then let them rest at room temperature for an hour.
This will allow the balls of dough to rise naturally and will have doubled in size after an hour.
Making The Crispy Thin Crust Margherita Pizza
- One ball of dough
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of pizza sauce
- 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese
- 2 teaspoons of cheddar cheese
- Spinach
- Dried oregano for seasoning
You can make your own pizza sauce or just use your favorite brand of jarred pizza sauce. This is a specific recipe so you can also use other ingredients for the toppings if you want to.
Step 1: Preheat The Oven
This pizza recipe is cooked in two different ways to make the crispiest crust.
Place a cast-iron pan inside the oven and then set the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to let it preheat.
Close the oven door and then allow the cast-iron pan to preheat inside for 15 to 30 minutes.
This will create a nice and hot surface for the pizza to sit on in order to make a crispy crust.
Step 2: Stretch The Dough
Get one ball of dough that you have allowed to rise for an hour and then use a rolling pin to stretch it.
You can also use your hands and I recommend this to make the dough thinner.
Push the edges of the dough and stretch it with your flat hands.
Make sure that the thickness on the edge and at the center of the pizza dough is even so that the crust will cook evenly.
Step 3: Cook The Dough
This is the initial cooking process and you do not have to put the sauce nor the toppings on the dough just yet.
Place the dough on the cast-iron pan and then put it back in the oven.
Let the dough cook for a good 4 minutes and then remove the pan from the oven.
You can also use a thin layer of olive oil on the pan before putting the dough so that it does not stick to it.
Step 4: Bake The Pizza
After cooking the dough quickly, remove the cast-iron pan from the oven with the dough still in it and then start putting the pizza sauce and spreading it with a spoon, then add mozzarella cheese.
For this recipe, I only made a simple pizza hence the spinach leaves but you can also use other toppings such as shredded sausage, pepperoni slices, and other vegetables for your pizza.
Place the cast-iron pan with the pizza in the oven and then let it bake for another 8 minutes.
Once the cheese is bubbling and the edges of the crust are browned, remove it from the oven.
Cut the pizza and then serve!
How Do I Make My Pizza Base Crispy In The Oven?
There are many ways to make your pizza crust crispier in the oven.
If you use a conventional oven, then you will need other tools to attain a crispy crust as the heat will not quite do the job.
You can use a pizza stone as it helps in removing the excess moisture from the dough, thus, making the crust crispy.
Using oil on a pan before putting the dough in it will also help.
Oil heats up really quickly so you will be able to make the crispy crust but you need to be careful not to let it burn.
Cooking the pizza dough at high temperatures quickly will also make it crispier.
What Is The Secret To A Crispy Pizza Crust?
There is no one-trick or ingredient for making the pizza crust crispy.
You can make the pizza crust crispy with different tricks such as adding oil to your cooking surface or pan.
You can also add sugar to the dough when making it to not only add flavor but also help it create a crispy crust. Increasing the temperature is also helpful in making the crust crispy.
The general trick is to reduce the moisture on the dough as quickly as possible.
That way, the dough will rise and harden right away, creating that delicious, crispy crust on your pizza.
How Thin Should I Roll My Pizza Dough?
Using a rolling pin to shape and stretch your pizza dough is good but doing it by hand is the best way to do it, in my opinion.
You can feel the thickness of the dough properly so you can balance it.
The ideal thickness of dough when you make thin-crust pizzas is somewhere between a quarter to an eighth of an inch.
This is thick enough to handle toppings but also thin enough to become crispy.
