It is very likely that I have leftover deep-dish pizza because of how heavy and filling it is. So I figured I should probably learn to reheat deep-dish pizza at home.
Luckily, there are various ways to do this, and they are all pretty easy. However, it is slightly different than reheating a regular pizza.
As we all know, deep-dish pizza is a thick pizza with layers of toppings and cheese which means that it takes time to let the heat get in the middle of the pizza, and you also have the risk of burning the crust.

So reheating deep-dish pizza is about finding the right balance of heat where it is hot enough to cook the thick pizza while also being mild enough to avoid burning the outer parts.
One benefit you get from deep-dish pizza is pizza sauce on top instead of the thin toppings, so there is some sort of protection when there is too much heat.
Nonetheless, I still have to be careful with the different reheating methods I use to perfect it, so here are how you can reheat deep-dish pizza and how to do each.
How To Reheat Deep Dish In Microwave
Using a microwave oven to reheat thick pizzas, especially deep-dish pizzas, is one of the best ways to reheat deep-dish pizza because of its convection heat.
That means that even with the thick toppings on the pizza, the heat will evenly be distributed as it slowly heats the pizza all the way through.
You can follow these steps for reheating deep-dish pizza in the microwave:
Step 1: Take the pizza from the freezer or fridge and let it thaw on the counter at room temperature.
Step 2: Once the pizza comes to room temperature, place it in the microwave and then set the temperature to high.
Step 3: Let the pizza reheat for at least 5 minutes before checking it. Once the crust is crispy, remove the pizza from the microwave and let it cool down on a plate.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy!
Note: The interior of a deep-dish pizza is already cooked so reheating it on high heat for too long will most likely overcook it.
How To Reheat Deep-dish Pizza Using Air Fryer
Air fryers are a convenient cooking appliance you can use to reheat your deep-dish pizza. Setting up and heating up does not take much time, so your pizza is ready within a few minutes.

With proper heating elements and air circulation, the air fryer can also reheat the thick pizza quickly without leaving the inner parts cold.
Here is how you do it:
Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with the air fryer basket inside.
Step 2: Line the air fryer basket with perforated parchment paper or foil to prevent the pizza from sticking to the basket.
Step 3: Place the deep-dish pizza in the air fryer basket and then allow it to reheat for 3 minutes before checking it.
Step 4: If the deep-dish pizza is still not reheated, check again after 6 minutes. The crust should be crispy enough, and the toppings should be reheated.
Step 5: Once the deep-dish pizza is reheated, remove it from the air fryer and let it cool down before serving.
How To Reheat Deep-Dish Pizza Using A Skillet
You can also reheat your deep-dish pizza using a skillet on the stove. The key is to recreate an oven by covering the skillet so the heat will roll over the deep-dish pizza.

Here are the steps:
Step 1: Preheat the cast-iron skillet on the stove over medium-high heat.
Step 2: Lightly drizzle the skillet with cooking oil or olive oil as it heats up.
Step 3: Cover the skillet and then reduce the heat to medium before you put the pizza.
Step 4: Place the pizza on the skillet and then let it reheat for 4 minutes without covering.
Step 5: After the crust of the deep-dish pizza has become crispy, take a tablespoon of water and pour it on one side of the skillet, so it does not soak the crust.
Step 6: Cover the skillet and reheat the pizza for another 2 minutes. The crust should be crispy, and the toppings will still have enough moisture as they heat up from the steam.
Step 7: Serve And Enjoy!
How To Reheat Deep-dish Pizza In An Oven
Reheating deep-dish pizza slices in the oven is always a good idea. The heat is well-distributed and prevents the pizza crust from burning, which is caused by direct contact with heat.
It takes a bit more time to reheat deep-dish pizza in the oven, but it is worth it. You will get a crispy crust and an evenly-heated interior on your deep-dish pizza.

Follow these simple steps to reheat your deep-dish pizza in the oven:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This lower temperature will help prevent overcooking the toppings and the golden-brown crust of the deep-dish pizza.
Step 2: Use parchment paper and lightly grease it with olive oil, or you can use cooking spray to coat it with a thin layer of oil.
Step 3: Place the pizza on the parchment paper and spray a little water before covering the deep-dish pizza loosely with aluminum foil.
Step 4: Bake until the deep-dish pizza is crispy and the cheese is a bit gooey. This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
How To Reheat Deep-dish Pizza In A Toaster Oven
Reheating deep-dish pizza in a toaster oven is also easy. Although it takes a bit more time than the other methods, it can make your Chicago-style pizza leftover perfect.
Here are the steps to rehat deep-dish pizza in a toaster oven:

Step 1: Preheat the toaster oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2: Cover your cooking sheet with aluminum foil and spray or drizzle a little bit of olive oil. This will prevent the crust from sticking to the cooking sheet.
Step 3: Place the deep-dish pizza slices you want to reheat on the aluminum foil. Put a tablespoon of water around the pizza slices by dripping it around.
Step 4: Cover the pizza slices loosely with another layer of aluminum foil.
Step 5: Place the pizza in the toaster oven and let it bake for 20 to 30 minutes, checking it every five minutes to ensure it does not become soggy or overcooked.
Step 6: Serve and enjoy!
The Best Way To Reheat Deep-Dish Pizza
I usually go with the oven and reheat the pizza if I have the time. That is because you need heat all around and not only on the surface of the pizza to reheat the stuffings.
Many posts on the internet say that the best way to reheat a deep-dish pizza is through the pan or skillet option. This might be the easiest or most convenient, but it is not the best.
Place a pizza stone or pizza steel inside the oven while it preheats to make a hot cooking surface. The pizza stone will help make the pizza crust crispy, like when it was cooked for the first time.
You can use the pan and skillet technique if you are only reheating a slice or two, but if you need to reheat the whole pizza, then doing it in the oven is the best.
How Long To Reheat Deep-Dish Pizza
This chart should help how long you have to reheat your deep-dish pizza.
Reheating Method | Temperature | Time |
Microwave | High Heat | 5 minutes |
Air Fryer | 350 degrees Fahrenheit | 3 to 6 minutes |
Skillet | Medium Heat | 4 to 6 minutes |
Oven | 350 degrees Fahrenheit | 10 to 15 minutes |
Toaster Oven | 450 degrees Fahrenheit | 20 to 30 minutes |
How To Store Leftover Deep-Dish Pizza
When dealing with multiple slices, you need to separate them to ensure they do not stick to each other while in the fridge or freezer.

For leftover deep-dish pizzas, you can follow these steps to ensure that you keep the pizza safe from bacteria and cross-contamination.
Step 1: Wrap every slice of deep-dish pizza with plastic wrap to prevent them from sticking together. This will also seal the moisture inside the pizza slices.
Step 2: Place the wrapped deep-dish pizza slices in an airtight container. A zip-lock bag will do if you do not have an airtight container.
Step 3: Place the pizza slices in the fridge. The pizza will last for up to 4 days in the fridge, so it is best to consume it before.
You can also place the deep-dish pizza slices in the freezer if you want them to last longer. The deep-dish pizza slices will be able to keep their flavor and texture in the freezer for 1 to 2 months.
Do You Need To Thaw Frozen Pizza Slices Before Reheating Them?
The best preparation before you reheats a frozen pizza is to allow it to rest for at least an hour at room temperature on the counter.
For frozen pizzas, you must thaw them first before reheating them.
That way, the parts of the pizza, especially the interior, do not get left cold when reheating it.
If your pizza has been cut and you only need to reheat a slice or two, leaving them to come to room temperature will be quicker. It usually only takes about 40 minutes for the deep-dish slices to thaw.
There is not much issue that you have to deal with when it comes to the crust or the outer parts of the pizza.
However, you need to thaw it first to get the toppings to come to room temperature and evenly reheat.
