Ooni has been making impressive portable ovens that can cook Neapolitan pizzas and there is an addition. Ooni Koda 16 was launched earlier in March 2020. It has amazing features and new systems to boast.
Ooni 3 is an old release from the Ooni and probably one of the first hits from the Ooni pizza oven company. This pizza oven was lightweight, portable, and made perfect Neapolitan pizzas.
Ooni 3 allows you to have two fuels to choose from. You can either get wood as fuel or buy the Ooni Gas Burner attachment.
Instead of the Ooni 3 (it has been discontinued)we now have the Ooni Fyra which is the fourth installment of Ooni’s wood pellet pizza ovens. If you want to read a post on Ooni Koda 16 vs Ooni Fyra then you can read the separate post that we have written on it.
Many customers have mixed reviews about the fuels you can use. The gas burner is preferable and it is better since you have better control over the temperature.
Ooni Koda 16 is a gas-only oven so you do not need an attachment as it comes with the oven.
They are both portable ovens but the main difference is the size. The Ooni Koda 16 can cook 16 -inch pizzas and the Ooni 3 can cook up to 13 inches.
If you are having internal conflicts on which one you should get, read on this review while we discuss their specific features and amazing performance.

Features and Design
Ooni really designs their ovens with simplicity and portability. The Ooni Koda 16 and the Ooni 3 are no different.
Ooni 3’s most notable feature is its chimney. It is perfect for heat distribution and the great thing about it is that it is detachable.
This means that you can store the Ooni 3 in a small space with its chimney detached and the hinged legs.
The cordierite baking stone is not built inside the oven so you can slide it out if you want to wash it.
Ooni 3 also has a door which is perfect for retaining heat. The door has a wooden handle that allows you to close or open the door without burning your hand.
You get to choose what fuel you use from wood or gas. The gas attachment is better since you can control the temperature.
There is some inconsistent heat when using pellets as your fuel. It is also a little messier so you need to clean the oven every now and then.
The shell of the oven and the gas burner attachment are made out of 430-grade steel which is a great metal that is heat and weather resistant.
You can fit up to 13 inches of pizza in the Ooni 3 but the ideal dimension is 10 inches so you can control the pizza inside the oven with ease.
As for the Ooni Koda 16, the oven does not have a chimney but the flames are controlled in a different way.
The shell is made out of powder-coated steel which is great for protection from outside elements.
Its inside is insulated with ceramic fiber and does great in keeping the heat inside of this large oven.
The entire baking stone measures at about 17 inches so cooking 16-inch pizzas will not be a problem.
You can control the temperature of the oven since it solely relies on gas as fuel. The knob consists of the flame controller and the ignition to get your oven started.
The Ooni Koda 16 weighs 18.1 kilograms so you might have a hard time moving it around. It is for outdoors but you can set it up in your patio so you do not have to carry it in longer distances.
The Koda 16 does not have a door but it does have Ooni’s patented Flamekeeper technology so the heat is kept inside the oven.
The best feature in the Ooni Koda 16 is the L-shaped flame where it sits on the rear of the oven all the way to the left side.
This is great for heating the large area inside the oven. It also helps cook your pizza in no time.
Performance of the ovens
Ooni Koda 16 can reach the 932 degrees Fahrenheit needed to cook Neapolitan pizzas in just 20 minutes. Once the oven is turned all the way up to its maximum temperature, it can cook pizzas in less than one minute.
The L-shaped flames really help a lot in keeping the heat up inside the oven. The flames can also be controlled so you do not burn your pizza.
The baking stone of the Ooni Koda 16 is also perfect for cooking pizza and you do not have to worry about burns.
It evenly cooks the pizza dough from the bottom up. You can cook larger 16-inch pizzas with the Ooni Koda 16 and it will turn out amazing.
The smaller Ooni 3 oven only needs 10 minutes to reach its maximum temperature. The gas attachment is perfect to get the heat necessary in no time.
As for using pellets as fuel, it gets hard sometimes. You do not have the freedom to control the temperature and if you are cooking other food, you might find that unpleasant.
You need to keep adding the pellets every 5 minutes so that you have the flame going on and so that the temperature inside the pizza oven is maintained.
This is a smaller oven and the fuel that you use will be usually low. It takes 30 seconds for you to see the dough rise and every minute you need to turn the pizza around so you do not burn one side.
In just 2 to 4 minutes, the Ooni 3 can cook amazing pizzas with a great crispy crust that is chewy on the inside.
What is it like cooking in the ovens?
In the Ooni Koda 16, the L-shaped flames really do a great job of cooking the pizza in less than one minute.
While waiting for the oven to heat up, you can prepare the pizza and you will still have a lot of time to do the toppings and shape your dough.
The insulation really keeps the heat inside the oven so even if you use it outdoors and the wind is blowing, the heat is retained and you can still cook in it.
As for its baking stone, the 15 millimeter-thick cordierite does the job and cooks the pizza dough evenly.
After heating the oven up, the baking stone evenly heats up as well and rest assured that the pizza will not have burn marks on some spots.
Even if you put a thick dough in the oven, you will still be able to cook it in no time.
The Flamekeeper technology keeps the oven burning so cooking a large 16-inch pizza will not be a problem.
The Ooni 3, on the other hand, is also amazing when it comes to its cooking capabilities. There are some limitations but it still does the job.
If you use the gas burner attachment, the Ooni 3 can cook pizzas in 2 minutes after it heats up. It has a hard time cooking pizzas with thick dough and toppings but it still cooks the crust very well.
The toppings are a little undercooked but putting it back in the oven for another few seconds will cook it perfectly.
When using pellets as fuel, it emits a thick cloud of smoke that can affect the taste of the pizza. If you like the smoky taste then it would not be a problem.
The smoke also gets in the way when you are turning the pizza.
The great thing about these two ovens is that you can cook other recipes and you are not limited to pizza alone.
You can use them to sear vegetables, roast chicken, or cook steak.
Make sure to use gas in the Ooni 3 so you can control the temperature where a certain food needs to be cooked.
Since the Ooni Koda 16 has a large cooking area, you can put multiple recipes in it that require the same amount of heat to be cooked.
You can also use a pan and place it on the baking stone.
To make sure that the baking boards do not break, you can heat up the pan on your stove before putting it inside the ovens so the stones would not suffer from thermal shock.
As Ooni produces more and more great pizza ovens, it gets harder and harder to choose which is best.
Honestly, it is hard to tell which is best because all of their ovens have features that the other does not have.
The Ooni Koda 16 and Ooni 3 are amazing pizza ovens in their line of gas-fueled ovens and they do have different features.
The Ooni 3 is great if you are on a picnic or traveling outside as it is very portable. You can remove its chimney or use the designated bag to carry it easily.
The Ooni Koda 16 has a large interior for cooking large pizzas. It can be stored in small storage because of the minimalistic design of the oven.
If you like moving around when cooking then the Ooni 3 is perfect because it is lightweight and you can carry it wherever you go.
If you want to cook large pizzas for many people, then the Ooni Koda 16 is perfect for you.
The Ooni Koda and the Ooni 3 are two amazing pizza ovens so choosing either would not go wrong for you. The Koda 16 is for someone who would like to have a pizza oven which is gas-fueled and does not mind an oven that is not multi-fueled.
Ooni 3 is an oven that uses wood pellets as fuel and although it uses the traditional wood as a fuel, the process can get a little cumbersome.
In my opinion, the Ooni Koda 16 is a better pick as you get more to play around with, and with all the more cooking space that you get, you can cook various other dishes as well.
Both the Pizza Ovens come with a three-year warranty when bought from the official Ooni website which is a pretty good thing as you can contact support for a replacement if there is some manufacturing defect in your pizza oven.
Not to say that the Ooni 3 is bad but with the limited space and with wood pellets being the primary fuel option, you might want to think twice before getting it.
You can get the gas burner attachment with the Ooni 3 but I personally felt that it was difficult to attach the gas fuel attachment and it can be a task if you are doing it for the first time.
If the gas burner attachment works well with your Ooni 3 then you are not going to have a lot of trouble with the pizza oven.
If your budget is something stopping you from getting the Koda 16 then you can go for the Ooni 3 or Ooni Fyra as it is a really great pizza oven under budget but if you have the money to splurge for an Ooni Koda 16 then you might want to go for it.
