At first, people brought pizza recipes in their countries and now we are exchanging large amounts of money for a pizza that is not authentic and cooked perfectly.
That is why more and more people are choosing to learn more about cooking pizza to attain a perfect bake rather than ordering rushed pizzas with soggy crusts and uncooked toppings.
With the help of companies making more portable pizza ovens, people are now getting into cooking pizza in the comforts of their homes.
Ooni has a reputation for making ovens that are very portable yet powerful.
They have a line of gas-powered ovens as well as ovens that use other kinds of fuel.
But Ooni is not the only one with a great pizza oven.
Companies are emerging left and right claiming that they have made the best portable pizza oven but not all of them are true.
Bertello is another amazing company that made the famous Bertello Pizza Oven that was featured in the show, “Shark Tank”.
It is one thing to make an amazing pizza oven and claim it to be the best but it is another thing for your product to be featured in an internationally known show.
That is why this article is trying to convince you that if you want that perfect pizza with a crispy crust, then you should consider buying either the Ooni Koda 16 or the Bertello Pizza Oven.
Here, we will compare and contrast how these two perform in different categories and see which fits you best. Either way, none of these two will disappoint you and that is guaranteed.
So let’s get started!
Design- Ooni Koda 16 vs Bertello Pizza Oven
The Ooni Koda 16 is nothing unfamiliar with fans of Ooni.
They have created pizza ovens with a design that is directly associated with them when people see it.
To put it simply, the original Ooni Koda is a smaller version of the new Ooni Koda 16.
It has that dome shape with cuts on the sides that is not only there for the eyes but has a function as well.
The Ooni Koda 16 has a powder-coated shell that makes it possible for you to use it outside your house without worrying about the damage it takes in from the weather.
In fact, Ooni recommends that you use the Ooni Koda 16 outdoors only since it is very powerful and it might produce harmful gas when its heat combines with other chemicals inside your house.
The Ooni Koda 16 kept the foldable legs that are found in most Ooni products so this means that you still have that portability to come with this larger oven.
The gas chamber is the only bulky part of this oven and Ooni chose to place it underneath the oven itself to balance the weight.
If you put that heavy compartment on the back, the oven might topple down because of the imbalance in weight.
The single knob consists of the ignition and temperature or flame control. It is installed on the side of the oven for ease of reach instead of placing it on the back of the oven.
The Bertello Pizza Oven is just as simple. With a dome structure and black coating, it prevents soot from gathering more dirt on the outside and in fact, soot is barely noticeable.
With its four sturdy legs, the Bertello Pizza Oven can handle large foods and you would not have to worry about it toppling over.
The Ooni Koda 16 has a single rear leg so that might be something to consider.
Ther Bertello Pizza Oven has a handle at its rear end for the door on the gas chamber.
With a wooden handle, you can open and control your fire even if it is piping hot inside the oven.
The handle is perfect and necessary for you to control the fire especially when you are using wood, charcoal, or pellets as fuel.
Features- Ooni koda 16 vs Bertello Pizza Oven
The Ooni Koda 16 is one of the largest ovens that Ooni has produced and it makes sense that it weighs over 40 pounds or around 18 kilograms.
The entire exterior width of the oven is 23.6 inches which as you may think, can handle a very large pizza. But in reality, there are some things inside the oven that make it smaller.
The oven has all-around 20-millimeter insulation made out of ceramic which makes the oven heat up pretty fast and keeps the heat inside for a long period of time.
Add the burners and you have a total of 17 inches in width which makes it just right to cook a 16-inch pizza and still be able to move it around inside the oven.
Ooni Koda 16 has a 15-millimeter thick cordierite stone that fits all throughout the width of the interior of the oven.
It is perfect in absorbing moisture from the food you cook and it can handle great amounts of heat.
Cordierite stone is the perfect baking stone for this very powerful pizza oven.
The fused and built-in knob is a combination of the ignition and flame control that is attached to the gas chamber attachment and can be reached while you are standing in front of the oven.
Because of the easy-to-reach knob, you can control the flames easily and avoid any burns on your food or on yourself.
The Ooni Koda 16 is still relatively portable but the gas attachment underneath really bulks up the look of the entire oven. But it is practical so there is nothing we can do with that.
Ooni really went on to introduce a new way to make the oven reach the standard temperature for making Neapolitan Pizzas by adding more burners.
No, not two rows of burners at the back but an innovative design of L-shaped burners that run on the back all the way to the left-hand side of the oven.
The flames from the back and the side of the oven direct heat straight to the roof of the oven to keep the dispersion of heat even.
The Bertello Pizza Oven is an extremely versatile oven where you can use either propane gas, wood, pellets, or charcoals as fuel to reach the highest temperature for this oven.
Initially, the Bertello Pizza Oven comes with the wood, pellet, and charcoal fuel attachment, and the propane gas attachment is sold separately.
There is also an attachment that allows you to put gas as fuel and combine it with wood so it gives that rich flavor on your pizza from the smoke.
You do not have to worry about cleaning since the Bertello Pizza Oven comes with its own dirt-catcher where all the ashes and smaller bits of dirt fall right on it.
It can reach high temperatures enough for you to cook a Neapolitan Pizza and other recipes. With that much power, you will need a cordierite stone to handle the heat.
The Bertello Pizza Oven has a 12.5 by 13.5 inches of cordierite stone installed in it which allows you to turn a 12-inch pizza around inside with just the right space.
Performance of the Ovens
With the L-shaped burners attached in the Ooni Koda 16, the oven reaches 932 degrees Fahrenheit in 20 to 30 minutes.
The Ooni Koda 16 can obviously cook a 16-inch pizza in under one minute which means that you can prepare as many pizzas in the 20 minutes of waiting and cook them almost instantaneously.
Since the overall interior of the Ooni Koda 16 is very large, the L-shaped burners are a really great help in attaining the great heat that the oven needs to make a great pizza.
Along with the insulation and Flamekeeper Technology of Ooni, the heat stays inside even if the oven does not have a door to cover the opening.
The large cordierite stone retains heat and cooks pizza perfectly. The porous surface of the stone absorbs moisture and creates a very crispy crust.
The great heat that the stone absorbs also allows it to cook the pizza dough all the way through in a fast manner so it makes that chewy inside.
The Bertello Pizza Oven is just as powerful and can reach the same temperature as the Ooni Koda 16. It might just take longer for it to reach that kind of heat when you use wood as fuel.
Since the oven can reach over 930 degrees Fahrenheit, the baking stone is cordierite so it can handle the heat and retain it for cooking the same amazing pizzas.
The wood and charcoal attachment are really great and the heat that the oven produces with them is good enough for making a Neapolitan Pizza.
If the wood and charcoal attachment takes too long for you, then you have the choice to get the separate gas attachment which works faster and produces the same authentic pizzas.
This small oven can cook a 10-inch pizza with ease and with a powerful flame, the pizza will be cooked in under two minutes and will come out with a crispy crust.
Since you get so much power on this oven, the versatility only gets better. You can cook whatever recipe you want and it will surely come out as amazing as it can get.
Cooking in the Ovens
With the easy ignition and control knob, the Ooni Koda 16 is really perfect for any recipe since the flames and heat can be easily controlled.
The large interior would have easily lost the heat but the insulation and the Flamekeeper technology really do their jobs and keep the oven heated for a long time.
All of the unwanted moisture from the dough is absorbed by the cordierite baking stone and makes the crispy crust in less than a minute.
The Bertello Pizza Oven has a powerful fire that it produces with such a small size. Using the wood as fuel still gets the job done but it is slower for sure.
The best fuel, in my opinion, is the combination. You use the gas fuel for more power and combine the wood to get that smoky flavor in your pizza.
It is just a bummer that the attachment does not come with the oven. However, it still makes it better since when you are outside the house, you can get wood from anywhere as your fuel.
Both ovens can cook many recipes with the power that they both produce.
The Ooni Koda 16 is the new addition of Ooni to their gas-fueled ovens and although there is nothing new when it comes to the design, it is undoubtedly a more powerful oven.
You get the new innovative L-shaped burner and you can be sure that the flames will heat up the entire oven with no problem at all.
With some added funds you can get the Ooni Koda 16 as it is more powerful and helps you cook pizzas quickly.
The larger cooking space also means that you can cook large pizzas and various other dishes inside this pizza oven using an iron skillet.
There is a lot that you can possibly explore when it comes to cooking with the Ooni Koda 16 pizza oven. Another reason to get this pizza oven would be the three-year warranty that comes with the oven when bought from their official website.
The Bertello Pizza oven is amazing as well considering it is a powerful oven for its size and with just a smaller capacity but gives you more choices for the fuel that you may use.
So if you want to move around a little bit more often then the Bertello Pizza Oven is the choice for you and if you want to cook just in your backyard, then you can get the Ooni Koda 16.
Ooni Karu is a similar pizza oven to the Bertello one (including the price) but slightly larger so if you want to get something exactly similar to the Bertello Pizza Oven but with a larger cooking space then you could go with the Karu as well.
Karu now has a larger version which in my opinion is the best buy from Ooni and THE ULTIMATE Ooni Pizza oven called Ooni Karu 16.
However, both the ovens are portable and can be moved by one person so I do not see this being a major downside.
The fuel and the size of the oven is something you should consider along with the money that you are ready to invest in a pizza oven.
It is up to you how you want to cook pizzas though rest assured that both of these ovens can cook a great Neapolitan Pizza so do not forget to check them out.
