Ooni Fyra vs Ooni 3: Is It A Replacement to the OG Wood Pellet Pizza Oven?

Ooni released their third installment in their wood-fired pizza oven series years ago in the form of the Ooni 3 and it did great.

With the release of the Ooni Fyra, we have come to think, is this a replacement to the original wood pellet pizza oven?

Well, the answer, for now, is still uncertain and would largely depend on your preference. However, they are nothing short of incredible and there is no doubt that they can both perform very well.

Ooni has released Ooni Fyra recently around the middle of April 2019. It is their fourth installment on the wood-fired oven that they have produced.

With the increasing demand of people wanting Neapolitan-style pizzas, Ooni has really done a great job in giving what their fans wanted by making great pizza ovens.

The great thing about Ooni is that they are still continuing the production of their amazing oven and they keep on improving them.

So that may be the best word for comparing these two, the Ooni Fyra is an improvement of the Ooni 3 but there are still features that the Ooni 3 can do better than the Fyra.

If you are looking for the perfect oven to start your career in making amazing pizzas for your family or for a small business then read on.

We will see which feature of each oven is better than the other in this review. Nonetheless, rest is assured that you will not be disappointed if you choose one or the other.

Ooni Fyra

1. The Ooni Fyra oven. It may or may not have the chimney and the pellet hopper attached already.

2. A 13.7-inch cordierite baking stone.

3. The Ooni Fyra’s Manual and Essential Guide that includes tips on how to use it as well as recipes that you may use.

Ooni Fyra vs Ooni 3: Design

So in this category, we will first look at the things that the Ooni 3 and the Ooni Fyra have in common.

The first noticeable thing that you will see in both of these ovens is the chimney. Both have around the same length of a chimney which is detachable.

They both have vents at the back used for proper air circulation in the ovens’ interiors. Their pellet hoppers are both covered so the vents at the back help in making powerful flames inside.

They also have doors that help in the insulation and retaining of heat in the ovens. The difference, however, is their handles where the Ooni 3 has wooden handles while the Ooni Fyra has glass-reinforced handles.

Nonetheless, they are both cool-to-touch so you can close or open their doors whenever you want to do so.

Ooni’s trademark foldable legs are also included in these two ovens. The Ooni Fyra has slightly longer legs that allow more air circulation between the oven and the surface that you put it on.

The Ooni Fyra has a somewhat more sleek design compared to the Ooni 3. It is like, the Ooni 3 has more edges while the Ooni Fyra has smoother surfaces.

For example, the pellet hopper of the Ooni 3 is a cube-like compartment whereas the Ooni Fyra’s is a tube.

Ooni 3

The Ooni 3 also appears to be a stainless steel box with a single layer while the Ooni Fyra has all the covers and layers that it needs to make it look like it has great insulation – and both ovens do.

The door of the Ooni Fyra has the first-ever peephole from Ooni. They included about an inch of opening beside the door handle where you can see if the flames are going without opening the door.

This door can also be hung with a hook on its top part that perfectly sits in place at the bottom of the door so you can let go of it while you check on the pizza that you are cooking.

Ooni Fyra vs Ooni 3: Features

The Ooni Fyra and Ooni 3 have the same weight of 22 pounds or 10 kilograms. They are both made from 430-grade stainless steel and are perfect for outdoor cooking.

The Ooni Fyra has a powder-coated shell that really shields it from sunlight and rain as well. The same goes with the Ooni 3 although its shell is not powder-coated.

Since they are very lightweight, both ovens can be easily carried around and if you want to go far from your home to cook, then you can bring them with you to cook pizza wherever you are.

Almost if not all Ooni ovens are made to be portable and made for the outdoors so you can enjoy seeing and feeling nature while you cook the most amazing pizzas.

They also have the same baking stone that is 0.4-inch thick cordierite stone which is perfect in retaining heat.

You can also remove the stone if you want to clean it. However, Ooni recommends that you just leave the stone inside the oven to self-clean.

The power that these ovens produce is enough for the stone to pyrolyze the remaining food bits on the surface.

The baking stones measure at around 13 inches so you can clearly fit 12-inch pizzas in them although Ooni suggests that 10 inches is the ideal size of pizza so you can still move it around while it is cooking.

The chimney of the Ooni 3 can be detached as well as the Ooni Fyra’s. However, the Ooni Fyra’s chimney can be adjusted to limit the airflow, therefore, giving you more control of the flames.

Ooni 3 wood pellets

The Ooni Fyra’s chimney can also be separated. The chimney consists of two parts that can be detached from each other and can be fitted inside the oven for portability.

Both ovens have foldable legs so when they are in their simplest form, you can store them in a very small cabinet and space will not be an issue.

The Ooni Fyra’s doors can be reversed which means that it can still hold on while the handles are pointed inside. This further makes the oven portable and smaller when you travel with it.

Ooni Fyra vs Ooni 3: Performance

The Ooni Fyra can reach up to 932 degrees Fahrenheit in just under 15 minutes. With that amount of heat, your pizza will be cooked in under 60 seconds.

Using only wood pellets, the Ooni Fyra can get up to that heat and cook a Neapolitan-style Pizza in no time.

It has great insulation and the chimney helps in circulating the heat inside. The air from the vent in the back is very great and the fire just keeps going on.

The wind from the back is sometimes uncontrollable and that is where the chimney comes in. It directly lets the flame and heat rise up radiating the heat from the top inside the oven.

It uses wood pellets and can produce power that is much like the ones that bigger ovens produce with the use of gas.

The baking stones of both ovens are amazing. They can retain heat and help the oven cook the pizza from the bottom up creating crispy crusts and evenly cooked dough.

Ooni Fyra

As for the Ooni 3, the wood pellet can be powerful as well as it heats up the oven up to 932 degrees at the same amount of time.

The problem with the Ooni 3, however, is that it uses a lot more fuel than the Ooni Fyra. The Ooni 3 is better off with the gas attachment.

It can reach temperatures of over 900 degrees in just 10 minutes and lets you cook Neapolitan-style Pizzas in less than a minute.

However, the gas burner attachment is sold separately. Sticking into the wood pellet might need more fuel but it is not that bad after all.

Both ovens can reach the standard heat needed to cook a pizza with a crispy crust and a chewy inside but the Ooni Fyra is a little bit more efficient in this category.

You cannot blame the Ooni 3 since its competition has better insulation and heat retention capability.

Cooking with the Ovens

There is not much comparison needed between these two as they almost identically perform. They have the same power and they have the same size.

With ovens like the Ooni 3 and the Ooni Fyra, it is true that you can cook a Neapolitan-style Pizza in a minute or even less.

The preheating time is not that long as well. In under 15 minutes, you can start cooking in these ovens so you better prepare your pizza while the ovens are heating up.

Best Wood Fired Pizza Ovens

Cooking with Ooni 3

Once you put the pizza inside the ovens, you need to keep an eye on them. You might need to turn the pizza around every 10 seconds or even less to prevent burnt areas.

The peephole of the Ooni Fyra is perfect for this as it gives you a proper look at the interior of the oven even if the door is closed.

You might also need to refuel the ovens every 20 minutes to make sure that they continue burning if you want to cook more pizzas.

As for other recipes, the ovens are really good at retaining heat so the powerful start that they give can last for a long time. So do not cook recipes that only need slow, low heat.

The Ooni 3 is better with the gas burner attachment. It can sometimes be slower but the wood pellets produce a thick cloud of smoke which makes it hard to look inside the oven.

Conclusion

Ooni has really improved in their pizza ovens, and the Fyra is a major improvement to the Ooni 3 Pizza Oven. If I had to choose then I would blindly go with the Fyra especially after all the features that the Fyra has to offer.

None of their pizza ovens are disappointing and they can all give you that amazing pizza with a crispy crust that we all love.

In fact, once you get a grip on cooking pizza, Ooni just makes it better by producing a pizza oven that can put the restaurants in shame.

The Ooni 3 and the Ooni Fyra are very amazing pizza ovens. They are small but powerful beyond their size and the price point makes the pizza ovens affordable.

With just wood pellets as fuel, they surely are surprising. Most ovens that use wood pellets do not reach 900 degrees Fahrenheit so these two ovens are very rare for their size and power.

So, is it worth getting the Ooni Fyra or the Ooni 3?

Well, I would definitely go with the Ooni Fyra since it has better heat retention, faster heating up capability, better fuel hopper, basically, everything is just better with the Ooni Fyra.

Do not let yourself be amazed by that alone as Ooni keeps on delivering. If you order straight from their website, your product will have a 3-year warranty.

They are also very confident that any of their products will perform like they are advertised and if they do not, you will be allowed to return it and get your money back within the first 60 days of your initial purchase.

As of the writing of this review (April 2019), the Ooni 3 is currently out of stock from their website and the Ooni Fyra is yet to be released in the coming months.

Basically the Fyra is an updated version of the Ooni 3 oven and in my opinion, it is way better than the old Ooni 3 model.

Ooni is going to start shipping the Ooni Fyra by the end of May so you can pre-order your pizza ovens right now. Nonetheless, check out their website for more of their amazing products and see which one fits you and your pizza dream best!

Wow! Specifically, this is a great post that has helped juxtaposed between the ooni fyra and the ooni 3 and to be honest,I will say they have both been well expatiated on. Their weaknesses strength. Well! I wouldn’t specifically say but I think it boils down to ideas and needs. What we specifically want from each of them would determine what we would get. Thank you so much for this

I consider myself a capable chef and I’ve used some of the Ooni products in the past. However, I haven’t used any of their pizza ovens before and it’s fascinating to learn about two of the best on this post. Based on the review, I’ll pick the Ooni Fyra over the Ooni 3 due to the farmer’s special features as well as its sleek design.

My family bus a huge fan of pizza, especially my immediate younger sibling. There’s no week that goes by that she doesn’t always want to get a pizza. We are considering getting an oven so we will start making our own pizza since we spend so much on getting it almost all the time. I think the Ooni fyra is a nice option for us. Thanks for this article it helped.

Hi! I really like the Ooni 3 Pizza Oven. And the reasons are: we can open it’s doors while the pizza is in the oven. My parents will be using this little oven and I don’t want them burnt.

And the other thing I like about it is its weight is comfortable to carry. Any of us can take 22 pounds.

Thank you very much for your help with this post.

The new Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven is here! The Ooni Fyra is the successor of the Ooni 3, which is the world’s first portable pizza oven fueled by wood pellets. I just go them before the lockdown and i haven’t had any course to regret it as it has really proven to be the best i have seen….one thing i like about it is the fact that it’s cheap and cheap too.

Personally, when it comes to the best-tasting pizza’s I do not feel that there is much debate that wood-fired pizza’s taste the best. Everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion, but if you think otherwise, you’re just wrong. thank you for creating such a beautiful article. it is awesome
