Is Frozen Pizza Healthy?- How bad is it?

May 9, 2019 by Shrey Leave a Comment

We all know by now that Pizza cannot be considered as a healthy food option. Although, there is a doubt if Frozen Pizzas are unhealthier than the ones you get in the restaurants.

In this post, we would be busting another myth and discussing if this is really true and if you can save some calories just by getting a pizza delivered.

I totally understand that frozen pizzas are really convenient as all you need to do is pop it into an oven and within a  few minutes, you have a really delicious pie.

So, if you are too busy with work or just didn’t have time to cook food, it seems like a pretty good option. It is quick, easy to make and delicious making it a really popular choice these days.

Frozen Pizza is not that far from the ones that you get in fast food restaurants. You have to understand that Pizza is going to be unhealthy as it is loaded with carbs, fats, and sodium. So frozen pizzas do come in the same category.

But, is it unhealthier than the ones you get in the restaurants?

More or less the calories that you consume are pretty much the same. ON an average, one slice of a 10-inch pizza has around 380-400 calories.

Yes, you are consuming that many calories per slice. On average, daily calorie consumption has to be around 2000 calories so eating three slices is going to give you half of your daily calorie value.

With my height, it is around 1500 calories so technically I can just eat a few slices of pizzas and reach my daily calorific value.

Frozen pizzas just get a little unhealthier because of the preservatives and the fact that the vegetables lose their nutritional value since they ahve been frozen since really long.

So, when you look at frozen pizzas they are nothing but slices of carbs and sodium which is really unhealthy.

What about the pizzas in Fast food restaurants?

You can choose some healthier options like the pizzas that have vegetable toppings and chicken but even then it does not change the overall nutritional value of the pizza.

It is pretty clear that if you are on a strict diet and want to lose weight then it is best that you avoid eating pizzas from these outlets.

There are many crust variants available as well such as deep dish and cheese crust pizza which just makes the situation even worse.

With these crusts, you are just adding up a few more hundred calories per slice which might not be something that you are expecting.

So, bottom line most of the fast food chains are not going to give you a relatively healthier pizza option in comparison to the frozen pizzas.

Are you suggesting that one should completely avoid eating pizzas?

No, I’m not that evil! All, I’m trying to say is frozen pizza might not be the healthiest option of them all. Fast food chains and frozen pizzas are just for the taste.

They have no nutritional value whatsoever. If you really want to minimize your losses while eating a pizza then try making them at home.

If you really want to have some really great quality pizzas then you can easily make them at home. The  Uuni 3 Pizza Oven has been amazing when it comes to making restaurant quality pizzas.

Sometimes, it feels like the Uuni Pro makes the pizzas even better than the ones you get in the best pizza restaurants. So, if you are a pizza enthusiast then do consider getting one of them.

If an indoor pizza oven would do the trick. The key is to make pizzas at home and you can make them as healthy as you possibly can since the ingredients are all fresh and you are not dependent on anything that is made in bulk.

Below are tips that can really help you cut down some unnecessary calories while eating your favorite pizza.

1. Go with Thin Crust Pizzas

If you really want to eat more pizza slices without putting on weight then you might want to consider eating a thin crust pizza and not going for the pizza which has a lot of cheese in the crust.

Believe me, eating thin crust pizza can really help you save a lot of calories as a deep dish cheese crust pizza can have almost 700 calories a slice while a thin crust pizza with some basic toppings and cheese can have around 350 calories.

Basically, you would be saving 350 calories. Most of us burn 350 calories in a one-hour workout, so you might want to think about it.

2. Eat a salad or some veggies with your pizza

Now, another way to not put on weight is by doing some potion control. If you want to eat less of pizza and still be satisfied then we suggest that you have some salad along with it so that you feel full quicker.

Feta Cheese Pizza

3. Choose your toppings carefully

Another smart choice that you can make is to choose your toppings really carefully. By this, I mean that try to include lean protein in your toppings as they would make you feel full really fast.

So, instead of going for the classic pepperoni and cheese pizza you might want to go for something that is a bit more healthier like grilled or roasted chicken.

4. Replace the Flour

Yes, go totally flourless and opt for the cauliflower base pizza or you can just replace refined flour with whole wheat. This way you are adding more nutritional value to your pizza and at the same down cutting down way too many calories.

There are a lot of different replacements that you could get, some people like to use coconut flour, almond flour or just whole wheat flour.

5. Remove that excess oil

The Pizza you get in restaurants (or sometimes the ones made at home)most of the times have oil on top of it and even though they taste delicious but did you know that just blotting that oil with a tissue can help you cut down a few calories.

Yes, you heard me right, by just blotting that oil, you can cut down some considerable amount of calories, so the next time you are eating a pizza make sure you do that.

6. Cut Down on Cheese?

Now, I know for many of you eating pizza just means savoring all those different types of melted cheese which is on top of it but overdoing the cheese is just going to make you gain a few pounds.

I understand, cheese is just so hard to resist but make sure you are not going too overboard with the cheese. I would not recommend you to use very little cheese but just don’t make it all about the cheese in the pizza.

Moderate usage of the cheese is fine and gives you all the flavors you need. The deep dish cheese crust pizza is just a bit much and I would usually not recommend anyone going that far.

Hopefully, these tips would help you understand and choose better when it comes to a pizza. Making a pizza at home is really a cost-effective and healthier option.

Try doing that in order to save some coins and cut out some calories.
