How to make Pizza on a Gas Grill- Convert your Gas Grill in a Pizza Oven

September 16, 2019 by Shrey Leave a Comment

If you own a gas grill and are wondering whether or not making a pizza on a gas grill is possible, then you have come to the right post.

I think cooking a pizza in a gas grill can be done easily given, that you have an amazing grill that has pretty good heat retention.

Most of the grills do not have this issue, so it means that you can easily cook a pizza with most of the gas grills. The result is pretty amazing and once you try the pizza made from a grill, you would never want to start your indoor oven again.

The results are pretty amazing. Although you may not get those perfect leopard spots as you get with the Ooni Pro Oven, the cooked pizza is no less than the ones you get in restaurants.

There are several ways in which you can cook a pizza on the grill and in this post I would discuss the methods that I have used in order to get the best results from the grill.

Method 1: Cooking a pizza using some bricks.

In this method, you are going to fire up the grill and place some bricks and on top the bricks we would be placing the pizza pan. Now you just need to use the brick to elevate the pan so that it gets heated evenly from all directions.

Now, make sure that the temperature inside the grill is 450 F or above and then place the pan with the pizza that you wish you cook inside this grill.

Within 5-7 minutes, you would have your pizza cooked. The crust would be golden brown and the cheese would have melted with perfectly cooked toppings.

The results are so impressive that you would never be able to tell that this pizza was cooked inside the grill. We have tried doing this on the Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill and the results are just amazing.

You can see for yourself in this video, how easy it is to cook this way and do try this and let us know how your pizza turned out in the comments below!

Method 2: Placing the Cast Iron skillet directly on the grill

This is another way in which you can cook a pizza and that is by placing a cast-iron skillet on the grill and then placing the pizza on it.

This method might need you to place the skillet and then heat up the entire insides of the grill to about 450 F and above.

Once you are done with that, you can make a pizza of your choice and place it on the iron skillet with the help of a pizza peel.

Be careful as the insides are going to be really hot and avoid touching anything. If possible, wear gloves so that your hands are protected at all times.

Let the Pizza cook inside for about 5-7 minutes. The cooking time really depends on the crust of the pizza. It can take longer to cook if the crust is thick.

Make sure you are not lifting the lid of the grill every 5 seconds as that could decrease the temperature inside the grill since maintaining the temperature inside is really important.

Once done, you can take out the pizza.

Method 3: Use Pizza Kits

Another way to make pizzas on a grill is by using pizza kits. These usually consist of a pizza stone and all you need to do is place it on the grill for even heating of the pizza.

So, place the pizza stone and set the temperature of the grill to 500F. Once the grill reaches the temperature, all that you need to do is place the pizza on the stone using a pizza peel.

Make sure you use a wooden pizza peel as the insides of the grill are going to be really hot and you do not want to touch anything.

Once you place the pizza on the stone, cook it for about 3-4 minutes. The pizza would usually take 5 minutes and after that, you would see that the crust is cooked beautifully like you have cooked the pizza inside an oven.

Method 5: Using a Pizza Stone

Probably another way that you can

Method 4: Grill the Pizza

So, in this method, you are going to first make the pizza base and then grill it directly on the grill. This method is a little different and even though it is not going to give you traditional results it is pretty amazing.

you first make the base and then cook one side on the grill. Once it is done, take out the base and now flip it and place the toppings and cheese on the cooked side of the base.

Now, place the pizza on the grill with the uncooked side exposed to the grill. This way you would have both the sides crisp and cooked perfectly and the toppings cooked right along with the perfectly melted cheese.

Overall, pizzas cooked this way are different though they taste really good. You can give this method a try and even though it is not the conventional way, it would still give you some amazing tasting pizza.

I personally love to keep pizza on teh bricks as that is the one that gives me a perfectly cooked pizza like it was kept in the pizza oven.

You can try the other ways as well and let us know what you think in the comments.

Do tell us which one of these methods is your favorite and which one do you usually use in order to cook a pizza on the grill.
