In this post, we have all the techniques that teach you How to cook pizza on a Rec Tec Grill so that you can make the perfect pizza at home without the need for a pizza oven or a conventional oven.
There are many ways to cook pizza, and one of the best ways to do it is on a pellet grill.
You can get more flavors from this cooking style than making pizzas on a gas grill or a gas oven.
Rec Tec grills have produced many grills that can make the best pizzas that are full of flavor.
They can make your pizza with a perfect crust and bubbling cheese on the toppings.
The problem is, they can get too hot, and without the proper technique, your pizza will most likely burn.
You also cannot randomly use pizza stones on them as they might break from the heat.
Rec Tec does not produce a pizza kit, so you have to make your own or use other ways to cook your pizza perfectly.
Luckily, we have the guides here on how to make your pizza on the grill.
So load up your pellets on the grill and prepare your ingredients.
We will be looking at the different ways that you can make pizza on your Rec-Tec grill for a perfect snack or meal.
Make Your Own Pizza Kit
While making your pizza kit sounds a little bit hard, it is easy as long as you have the tools. With this technique, you will be able to make pizzas anytime on your Rec-Tec grill.
The first thing you need to do is to make an elevated cooking space for even cooking.
This is where you will need some bricks or a setup like this in order to elevate your grill space.
This method is perfect for making crispy crusts on your pizza without the risk of burning it.
You need to remember that you have to be careful if you are using a pizza stone for cooking.
This is done so that the pizza crust does not burn due to the high temperatures of the grill grates.
Prepare The Cooking Area
Once you get the elevated cooking grate ready, you can place it on the grill grates.
Heat the grill and then place the pizza steel on top of the elevated cooking grate.
Let the Rec-Tec grill preheat along with the pizza steel, and then prepare the ingredients for your pizza.
Set the temperature at 350 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for cooking the pizza.
Take note that the pizza steel will most likely have a higher temperature reading than the insides of the grill.
So I suggest going for 350 degrees Fahrenheit when preheating the grill.
Cook The Pizza
Once the grill has reached the set temperature, you can then place the pizza on the pizza stone.
Close the lid to create convection heat inside the grill and allow the heat to stay on top.
This will cook the pizza from both under the pizza steel and from the roof of the grill lid.
Make sure to adjust the height of the legs on the elevated cooking grate, so it fits with the lid closed.
After 8 minutes, check the pizza if it has a browned crust and the cheese is bubbling or is melts over the toppings.
Get the pizza out of the grill and then slice it before serving.
Can I Use A Pizza Stone Instead?
While pizza steel is perfect for grills because of the direct heat, you can use a pizza stone when cooking pizzas on the grill.
I prefer using the Artisan Pizza Steel and it is super durable and it has lasted me a really long time. Some other good ones are from NerdChef.
Just remember not to put it too close to the firebox while cooking.
This is the main reason why you should always elevate the cooking grate for a pizza stone.
You can cook with pizza steel directly on the grill grate because it is more durable over direct heat.
On the other hand, the pizza stone needs to be far from the firebox as it can easily break when you apply direct heat over it.
So always use an elevated cooking grate for a pizza stone.
Use Fire Bricks
This is one way of elevating the pizza stone without setting up a separate grill grate for an elevated cooking grate.
You can just use bricks for the pizza stone to sit on when cooking.
If you have a large pizza stone, I suggest using up to three fire bricks, so you do not get to weigh down on the center of the pizza stone.
So set up the fire bricks in the middle of the grill grate.
Place the pizza stone on top of the fire bricks so you can cook on top of it.
You can then preheat the Rec-Tec grill with the fire bricks and the pizza stone and then cook the pizza.
I prefer this method over the elevated cooking grate method because the fire bricks help retain the heat inside the grill.
They help create an evenly heated surrounding.
Cooking On The Grill Grate
There is also another way to cook pizzas on your Rec-Tec grill without the help of other setups.
You can just cook the pizza directly on the grill grates, and it will have a perfect crust.
However, most pizzas cooked in the oven do not cook the pizza on the grill with all its ingredients.
There is another way to do this to cook the pizza perfectly.
If you put the pizza toppings right away before placing it on the grill, there is a high chance that you will be having a pizza in the firebox as it goes through the spaces between the grill grates.
Step 1: Cook The Dough First
Once you have prepared your pizza dough, knead and shape it to the size that you like.
Put a little bit of extra flour to not stick on the grill grates and not put the toppings yet.
You can also brush some olive oil on the grill grate, so the fresh dough does not stick to the grill grates.
Preheat the grill to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then put the pizza on it once it is ready.
Let it cook for 5 minutes or until the bottom of the crust is golden brown with some chars on it.
Keep the grill closed so you do not lose heat from the grill while you are cooking.
Step 2: Cook The Pizza
Once the bottom of the crust is ready, flip it over and then place the pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings on the cooked side of the crust. Make it quick and close the lid right after.
I have tried this, and even with 30 seconds of opening the lid, the grill lost about 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. So close the lid of the grill right away and let the pizza cook.
Check after 5 minutes, then remove the pizza from the grill if the crust is brown and the cheese melts. Slice and then serve!
Conclusion
As you can see, there are some easy ways to make pizza on your Rec-Tec grill without needing to worry about burning or accidentally letting the pizza go through the grill gates.
You need to know the proper ways of how to cook pizza on a grill. With Rec-Tec grills, you will be able to make the best pizzas with great smoky flavors from the wood pellets.
So follow the instructions above and start making your own grilled pizza.
Make sure always to keep the pizza stone away from the firebox to avoid breaking it!
