There are many reasons why I would prefer cooking pizzas on the grill as compared to an indoor oven, and if you are tired of eating the same pizza from your home oven and want to add some new flavors, then its time to shift to the grill.
It is a different story if you are blessed with ovens like the Ooni Koda 16, Roccbox, or Ooni Karu. But if that’s not the case, you can use your grill to make some flavourful pizzas.
There are some outdoor pizzas, especially the ones from Ooni, that are excellent and give you the perfect Neapolitan style pizzas.
However, if you are not interested in investing in one, then you can use your grill for cooking pizzas.

Why use a grill to make a Pizza?
The first and most important reason is HIGH Temperatures. Yes, the grill usually goes up to 500 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit and that is excellent for making Pizzas.
You can easily make some crispy crust pizza on the grill if you grill can reach that high temperature. The higher the temperature, the higher are your chances of getting an amazingly cooked pizza.
Another important reason has to be that anything cooked on the grill tastes so much better. Grilling adds a lot of flavor to the food that you are cooking.
So…Do Grilled Pizzas taste Better than Pizzas made in the Oven?
Depending on the type of fuel used in the grill, your pizza can have the wood flavor or charcoal flavor. Either way, it adds a lot of flavor to the pizza making it even more delicious as compared to the pizzas that you would have made in the oven.
These two reasons are good enough to get your grill started so that you can enjoy some amazing pizzas.
Do you need Pizza Stone to Grill a Pizza?
A Pizza Stone is going to help when it comes to cooking a pizza on a grill. If you want an evenly cooked base, then I would highly recommend using a pizza stone as they would help you get your crispy base pretty quickly.
Depending on which pizza stone you are using, you can easily make your pizza within 8-10 minutes inside the grill, which is relatively faster than a home oven.
You will love the results that you get on a pizza stone as it cooks the pizza better. However, I should add that even without a pizza stone, you will be able to cook amazing pizzas just that it would be a more grilled pizza base than usual.
You also get pizza kits for specific grills, and you could check them out on the grill pages if they have one, but most of the time, I feel you do not need to get one. A steel baking tray can do the job as well.
Can pizza stone go on the grill?
There are some pizza stones that do not crack on the grill. There are some new metallic pizza stones that are now available, which you can easily use on the grill as they would never crack.

How do you grill pizza without burning the bottom?
If you are placing the pizza base directly on the grill, then there are chances that you might burn the bottom of the pizza base.
In that case, I would recommend not cranking up the heat of the grill to the maximum temperature.
Heat the grill to a medium temperature and then place the pizza base on the grill grates; once you have cooked one side of the base, you can toss it the other side and start putting the toppings on the pizza.
Another point that you want to consider is brushing the grill grates with some oil. This way, you can avoid the base from sticking to the grates, and this would ensure that the base does not burn quickly.
Now, let the pizza sit on the grill grates for a few minutes and keep checking if the base is getting stuck. This way, you can avoid the pizza from getting burnt or spoilt.
How do you keep pizza from burning on the grill?
Another way to avoid burning the bottom of the pizza would be to use a pizza stone. Sometimes the grates can get extremely hot and burn the part of the pizza they touch.
This is bound to happen since you are making pizza on a grill, and if you do not like that happening, you can get a pizza stone so that it can evenly distribute the heat and cook the pizza base evenly.
You can even use a stainless steel plate, a baking tray, a cast-iron skillet, or you can even use the metal pizza stones that are getting pretty popular these days.
Do check the base every minute or two because the grills can get pretty hot, and once they do, they cook the base quickly.
How long should you grill a Pizza?
You can cook pizza on the grill within 5-6 minutes if the grill is on maximum heat. If you have a thin crust, then the pizza would cook pretty quickly.
I would highly recommend checking the base every 2 minutes so that you can avoid the pizza base from getting burned.
If you are cooking a pizza directly on the grill grates, then cooking a pizza will be extremely easy, and you can do it within a few minutes.
However, if you are using a pizza stone, then the pizza stone might take some time to reach high temperatures, and that might be an extra 5-10 minutes added to your cooking time.
Cooking pizzas on a grill can be quick, and it can be done within 5-6 minutes. Make sure you close the lid while cooking the pizza so that the pizza is cooked even faster.
What temperature do you cook pizza on the grill?
You can grill the pizza at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the higher the temperature of the grill, the better the pizza is going to be.
There are pizza ovens that reach 900 degrees Fahrenheit and give the best tasting Neopolitan pizzas; the only thing you need to keep in mind is that when the grill is hotter, you need to keep an eye on the pizza and make sure it does not get burnt.
You can easily end up with a burnt base if you get distracted once you place the pizza on the grill. Ideally, I would recommend 500 degrees Fahrenheit, but if you want to cook at a temperature higher than that, then you are not wrong; you just have to be more careful.
How do you cook pizza on a Weber gas grill?
There are so many tutorials out there on how you can quickly grill a pizza on a weber grill, and most of it involves using a pizza stone or a steel tray.
Something I would suggest is that you can always try using a steel pizza stone directly on the grill as this way, you can cook things so much faster.
You can even go the longer route of using a small stand and then placing a pizza stone on top of it and then placing the pizza on top of the pizza stone.
This is way too much work, in my opinion. Hence I would stick to using a stainless steel plate or tray and using tongs whenever you try to remove them from the grill since they can get extremely hot.
We can summarize the pizza cooking process on the Weber Gas Grill as-
1. Place the Pizza on the Grill as you can directly cook the pizza on the grill. Make sure to coat the grill grates with oil so that you can easily turn around the pizzas.
2. You can place pizza steel on the grill and then cook your pizza. It would take longer to cook the first pizza, but the second and the third pizza will cook relatively faster.
