For some, pizza might be a delicacy that you only eat every once in a while, and for others, pizza can be a daily thing that they eat just because it is one of the best foods ever made.

For years, pizza has been looked down upon because, at first, it was a very simple type of food. Some people even believed that it is food only for peasants because of the cheap ingredients.

But as years passed, many people started to like this amazing food. It famous in almost every corner of the world, and many cultures have adopted this recipe.

With this spreading adaptation of pizza, there are now many flavors that you can choose from. However, the best flavor, in my opinion, is the one that you make at home with your oven.

Just like the cultures around the world, you will be able to create your flavor when you cook your pizza at home. That is because you are free to choose whatever ingredients you want.

You can add as much or as little ingredient as you want to your pizza. This gives you versatility and cooks it the way you want to without going through the hassle of ordering the pizza.

Best Wood-fired Pizza Ovens In Australia

1. Ooni Fyra 12 Pizza Oven

One of the best companies in the pizza oven industry, Ooni has produced the best pizza ovens loved by many users. It is one of those powerful pizza ovens they have.

Ooni Fyra 12 is the fourth installment for their original pizza oven series. Ooni 3, the predecessor of the Fyra, has been discontinued, but there is nothing to be upset about as this pizza oven is great.

It is one of the most powerful pizza ovens with its size. It can only cook 12-inch pizzas, but it quickly with its great interior and evenly heated stone inside.

With that, you will be able to cook your pizza in just 60 seconds. The pizza is also not simply a mediocre one, as it will always come out great with crispy crusts and evenly cooked toppings.

I liked this pizza oven because it is very portable. It only weighs 20 pounds, so that meant that I could carry it around and bring it with me on tailgating trips and campings.

The protruding parts like the chimney and the legs were either foldable or detachable, which means that this pizza oven did not take that much space in the car when I went on trips.

2. Ooni Karu 12 Pizza Oven

This is another pizza oven that has had a good reputation from users. It is another one of those portable pizza ovens that Ooni produced, and it is one of the pioneers of wood-fired pizza ovens.

It is a small pizza oven that can produce temperatures of up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows you to cook pizzas in just 60 seconds, making the crust crispy and evenly cooked.

It has a great air circulation system that it uses to keep the fire burning. The firebox at the back gathers air through small vents on the same side and then releases it into the oven.

From there, the chimney gathers the used air and then releases it upwards. The reason I am emphasizing these is that these are the two important parts to control the temperature.

So if you want to increase the temperature, you can easily turn the lever on the chimney so that the air gets in and out freely, increasing the temp inside.

Another reason behind this amazing heat that the small pizza oven produces is the insulation. It all stainless steel, but it insulates the interior so well that it needs only 15 minutes to preheat.

I loved this pizza oven because it is very portable. I could use it on a small patio or bring it over to a friend’s house without the hassle as it folds in itself and weighs only a few pounds.

3. Napoli Bertello Pizza Oven

Napoli is one of the best pizza ovens that compete with the pizza ovens from Ooni. It has the same portability as most pizza ovens, but its unique design helps users clean it.

One of the problems with wood-fired pizza ovens is that they gather soot a lot. That is why this pizza oven has a matte black finish all over its body, so soot is hardly noticeable.

This pizza oven has a pizza stone that helps the pizza oven’s thick insulation to retain the heat. It also evens out the heat inside the pizza oven, which is great for cooking the toppings.

It is small and can only cook 12-inch pizzas, but it is advantageous since you can bring it anywhere you want to cook. It has thick insulation, but it does not weigh too much.

It is a bit weaker than the Ooni pizza ovens, but it can also cook pizzas in just one and a half minutes. That is powerful enough to make the crust of the pizza as crispy as possible.

I loved this pizza oven with its power because I could put it anywhere on the patio. The pure black color perfectly combines with any other appliance beside it, which is truly great.

4. Zesti Z1100 Portable Pizza Oven

This pizza oven is made famous by MasterChef Australia and many world-renowned chefs. It does say portable on its title, but this pizza oven weighs over 250 kilos.

That means that you can only set it up in a place where you would need it to stay there permanently. Its sleek design perfectly combines with other appliances such as refrigerators.

However, you should not set this pizza oven inside as it can cause a lot of problems. It is too powerful and will emit dangerous fumes, along with fire hazards inside the house.

It is great for cooking pizzas for many people as it has a large interior. It also has perfect insulation that was developed under 1200 degrees Fahrenheit to make it safe to touch.

I loved this pizza oven because it came with a huge cart that I used to store some ingredients and cooking tools. It made it easier as the things I needed were accessible to me.

The chimney was also helpful in adjusting the temperature inside the pizza oven. So when I needed to cook something other than pizza in it, I reached the desired temperature.

5. BioLite Basecamp Pizza Oven

This is one of the cheapest and most portable pizza ovens on the market.

It is only 20 pounds lighter, and as the name suggests, you can bring it to campings and tailgating trips.

This is a unique pizza oven that you can use only for pizzas.

It has a small booking area that can fit only a single pizza, so versatility might not be the strongest selling point of this pizza oven.

It uses sticks and slightly larger wood pieces, but it cannot handle blocks or hunks of wood.

It has a limited opening on the firebox, which you need to stay open a bit for air to go inside.

However, this small and relatively cheap pizza oven is powerful enough to cook pizzas in just 5 minutes.

The char and the smoky taste are clear when you taste the pizza from this oven.

It also has a special feature which I loved.

The heat produced in its firebox creates electricity that powers a fan to ensure a constant circulation of air inside the oven.

Besides that, I was able to charge my phone with this pizza oven because of this feature. The excess electricity then gets stored in the BioLite battery pack, which is great when you use it outside.

6. Subito Cotto Wood-fired Pizza Oven

If you want a pizza oven that will handle a big party for you, then this is the one. It can fit up to 5 pizzas simultaneously while also providing enough power to cook them evenly.

It has one of the thickest insulation of any pizza oven that there is on this list. It maintains its heat perfectly, and the outer parts of the pizza oven do not get too hot, so it prevents burns.

It is clear where this pizza oven’s design came from as it has a dome-like shape and a tunnel-like entrance. This is the same shape used in larger brick ovens used back then.

Because of the stone used for insulation, this pizza oven can retain heat even after putting the fire out. This allows you to cook many recipes in it as well while it is still hot.

You will not need to buy a lot of wood to keep this pizza oven going, as once fired up, the heat remains inside. That way, you will be able to cook without spending too much fuel.

I loved this pizza oven because it’s large, you can cook almost anything, and it has a strong stand with wheels that allows you to move it anywhere you want to.

7. R-US Lite Wood-fired Pizza Oven

Now, with this oven, you have two options on what to order.

You can choose either the set with or without a stand, and the good thing about it is that they both come fully-assembled for you.

It has a hanging door that completely closes the pizza oven, which is great for retaining the heat.

The door is made with heavy-duty stainless steel and has its thermometer.

While it is beneficial that it has its thermometer on the door, the readings can sometimes be inaccurate, especially if you constantly open the doors.

So keep it closed unless necessary.

With its power, this pizza oven can cook pizzas in just 2 minutes or less.

I also liked the option to easily control the temperature and even go with slow and low cooking.

Yes, this pizza oven can be used as a smoker, making it perfect for barbecue weekends. You can sear meat or even smoke them in this pizza oven, and they all come out great.

It also has stone for insulation which also helps it in weather resistance. This means that even after years of use, this pizza oven will stay beautiful and functional.

8. Alfa 4 Pizza Wood-fired Pizza Oven

This is one of my favorite pizza ovens because of its many accessories. Don’t get me wrong, it is a powerful pizza oven that can cook authentic pizzas in minutes, but it also has many accessories.

It is one of the largest pizza ovens on this list that can fit four pizzas in it at the same time. The power it produces can cook those four pizzas in just 90 seconds.

The floor of this oven has refractory tiles that can be interchangeable. Each tile is about 3 centimeters thick, which means that it can gather a lot of heat from the fire.

While cooking, the tile then releases the heat and evens out the temperature inside the pizza oven. It is combined with its ceramic insulation and is perfect for cooking under any weather.

This pizza oven comes with a long wooden brush that helps me get inside it and clean the ashes when cooking. Along with that is a door that you can remove completely.

That means that I was able to keep the fire going inside or block it from going out. The thermometer of this pizza oven is found on the side of the opening to track the temperature.

Why Wood-fired Pizzas?

As I have mentioned before, there are just some processes and factors that you need to consider to make authentic pizzas. You can attain it by wood-fired pizza ovens only.

Some charcoal ovens can do it, but the past has proven that authentic pizzas cook in wood-fueled ovens. That is the way that the first pizzaiolos cooked their pizzas with their huge brick ovens.

That is only one of the many benefits of wood-fired pizza ovens so before we get into the list, let us first know what advantages it has compared to conventional and other types of oven.

Fast Cooking

Great pizzerias invest in ovens that can get up to 900, sometimes even 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, to cook their pizzas quickly for multiple orders at the same time.

With that temperature, you will be able to cook pizza in just 60 seconds. You can get that with wood-fired pizza ovens since they, too, can get up to that temperature with only wood as fuel.

Compared to conventional ovens that can only reach a temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, wood-fired pizza ovens can get up to high temperatures and cook your pizza faster.

This makes them perfect for busy people as well. If you do not have 20 minutes to spare while waiting for your pizza to cook, then it is great to invest in a wood-fired pizza oven for that.

Authenticity

Aside from the fast cooking capabilities of a wood-fired pizza oven, the high temperature also makes the pizza more authentic. This is because of the heat needed to cook a pizza.

To consider a pizza authentic, it needs to have a crispy crust, and it is better if it cooks in just a minute at high temperatures. The high temperature that wood-fired pizza ovens produce is the secret behind this.

Wood makes the pizza more authentic. The smoke from the wood-burning in the oven gives the pizza a smoky flavor, making it great to make the pizza tastier.

This part of cooking pizza in a wood-fired pizza oven is perfect, especially for meat toppings. They will have that barbecue-like taste that is tasty and good for any type of pizza.

Aside from the flavors, you get from the ingredients you use, you can also add another layer of flavor to your pizza using wood. This is truly great, and you should try it.

See, as the fire from the wood starts to heat the pizza oven’s interior, you will notice that the heat distributes evenly. There, the smoke will then start to grab onto the interior.

Once you put the pizza in, the smoke will start to go down to the cold area where the pizza is on. Then, just mildly, the smoke will get into the pizza and start adding that delicious authentic flavor.

Retains Nutrients

When you cook something, the faster it finishes cooking, the more nutrients it will retain. That is another benefit that you can get from the high temperature that a pizza oven produces.

The ingredients that cook immediately will even retain the antioxidant properties within them. This is helpful since it counters the other harmful minerals that might get in the pizza.

Versatility

Last but not least, this benefit that you get from a wood-fired pizza oven is, I think, the selling point. Wood-fired pizza ovens are not boxed in with just pizzas when it comes to cooking.

As long as the food fits inside their chamber, you will be able to cook anything that you want in a pizza oven. They produce a lot of heat, so you have a wide option for the temperature to cook in.

A Simple Buying Guide

Here are a few tips or things that you should look for in a wood-fired pizza oven when you go shopping. These are a few and brief explanations since you will know what you want.

Overall Size

Of course, it is a given that you should always consider how large the pizza oven you buy is for the area where you are going to set it up. You should also consider the cooking space itself.

Make sure to buy the pizza oven that reaches the standard of how and for whom you cook. Get a large one if you like having parties or a small one just for the family’s meal.

Power

Since we have a common power source, most pizza ovens will say that they have the same power as others. But make sure and see if it can get up to at least 900 degrees Fahrenheit.

Build quality and Materials

Again, you should always look for the pizza oven with the best materials. You are going to use it outdoors, so make sure that the materials are weather and corrosion-resistant.

Conclusion

Wood-fired pizza ovens are becoming more popular nowadays since people now know what a real authentic pizza needs for perfection. They are one of the few appliances that can cook this.

They can emit that smoky flavor and induce it to your food. They are also powerful enough to make the pizza crust crispy every time you cook in them.

Make sure to get a pizza oven that has a pizza stone as well. That will help you make the heat evenly distributed in the pizza oven to get the best toppings in your pizza!
