New York City is where you can find delicious pizza places since pizza was introduced here by pizzaiolos who migrated from Italy and since then, the New York-style pizza has spread around the world.
Pizza preference is always personal but we must admit that New York pizza is a type of pizza that everyone loves.
If you are on a trip to the Big Apple and want to taste the best pizzas in the city, you can find many places in Brooklyn and other boroughs that you don’t want to miss while you are in the city.
I have compiled this list of the best pizza places in New York City that you should visit and try out the best pizzas they have.
New York-style pizza is your first choice when you are in the city. With the various restaurants that have this pizza, trying out as many as possible is your best bet to find what you like most.
What Makes New York Pizza So Different?
Perhaps the most iconic feature of New York pizza that makes it different is the large slices. The crust is thin and crisp but still soft enough to be folded.
The toppings, sauce, cheese, and dough used for making New York pizza are still relatively similar to other pizza types, but the crust and size make it different.
See, New York pizza is for people on the go, and believe me when I say that New York is one of the busiest cities in the world with people constantly on the move.
The large slice makes it easy for you to fold it so that the toppings do not fall off and you can eat the slice without a plate while walking.
Large and wide slices are not very common with other types of pizzas so this, in my opinion, is what makes the New York pizza so different.
I have another post that talks about New York pizza and Brooklyn pizza a little bit more with details if you are interested. Now, where do we find the best pizza place for our pizza?
Best Pizza Place In New York City
1. Lucali Pizza
Lucali pizza is in Brooklyn and they make great New York pizzas. They have the perfect balance of softness and crispiness on the crust of their pizzas.
What I like about Lucali is that they make the pizzas simple and do not add too much to get that authentic taste on the pizza.
The pizza sauce is a little sweet and tangy, and it combines well with the mixture of cheeses so when I order here, I usually do not add any more toppings to it.
The only problem with Lucali is that you have to make reservations and line up as early as 4 in the afternoon but I promise you, the pizza is worth waiting for!
2. L’Industrie Pizza
With a whopping 4.8 stars on Google reviews, L’industrie Pizza proves that many people love it for all the right reasons.
L’industrie Pizza uses a great crust topped with premium ingredients like fig jam and burrata but the real secret is in the dough of the pizza they make.
The dough they use is cold-fermented for three days and the result is a crispy, flavorful, and thin crust that is still thick enough to hold up the premium toppings.
L’industrie Pizza is in Brooklyn and they serve dine-in customers, takeout, or delivery so you can easily get one pizza from them through what is most convenient for you.
3. Williamsburg Pizza
Williamsburg Pizza, located on Union Ave in Brooklyn. It opened in 2012 and has grown into a big business producing classic pizzas that everybody loves (4.3 stars on Google reviews).
In my opinion, the best pizza from Williamsburg Pizza is still their classic Brooklyn pizza although you can get other more unique types of pizza.
There are uncommon options from Williamsburg Pizza like Apple Bacon pizza, mushroom and white truffle Tartufom, and Paesano that are all great choices.
4. Emmett’s On Grove
Emmet’s On Grove pizzeria is a pizza place that is a go-to place for people who love thin crusts on their pizzas.
The Tavern-style pizza that Emmett’s On Grove makes is a favorite, and it is a pizza with a very thin crust, cut into small square slices.
This makes the pizza perfect as finger food for snacks or meals. Other types of pizza also use authentic ingredients like the spicy Italian sausage on the Peggy O’.
There are other creative types of pizzas from the pizza place and I think it is worth a visit on Grove Street, New York if you love cheesy bites on your pizza.
5. Mo’s General
Located on Lorimer Street in Brooklyn, Mo’s General is one of the more popular pizza places in New York, and rightly so.
They have pizzas made meticulously to ensure you only get the best. It starts from the dough fermented for 24 hours to get maximum flavor.
The crust has a wide variety of toppings from more common ones like classic pepperoni to more inventive and creative toppings like barbecue.
6. Pizza Suprema
Each slice of pizza from Pizza Suprema ensures you get enough flavor and texture of the perfect pizza. The cheesy flavor and crusty texture have perfectly mixed with the sauce.
The pizza sauce is not too sweet and not too savory so the balance is just right. White pies are also available in Pizza Suprema and are also really good.
If you happen to be near 8th Avenue in New York, then you might pass by Pizza Suprema and I recommend trying out their pizza to experience what a true pizza slice should be.
7. Di Fara Pizza
If authenticity is what you are looking for, all you need to do is go to Avenue J in Brooklyn and look for this rather rugged-looking corner pizza place called Di Fara Pizza.
Di Fara Pizza gets high-quality ingredients straight from Italy making it amazing for people who like Neapolitan pizzas or other pizzas with thin crusts.
Even the late Anthony Bourdain praised Di Fara Pizza for the amazing pies they make. Avid fans of authentic pizzas wait outside the pizzeria every day so you have to be there early.
8. Ops Pizza
Ops Pizza has a unique tradition of pulling their mozzarella cheese in-house almost every day, so my first recommendation is to find any pizza on the menu that uses that cheese.
The crust of the pizza from Ops pizza is also amazing. Some pizza-lovers describe it as a mix between the puffiness of New York pizza and the crispiness/sturdiness of Neapolitan pizza.
The slightly charred crust goes well with the fresh toppings. Visit them on Himrod street in Brooklyn and you will taste one of the best pizzas.
9. Ace’s Pizza
There are multiple locations for Ace’s Pizza but perhaps the most recent branch is the one at Rockefeller Center, New York and they serve some mean pizzas that you’ll love.
They offer the best Detroit-style pizza which is a nice twist or refreshment if you get tired of the New York-style pizza around you.
Having other options within New York is a great idea and it shows even with this relatively new pizza place that people love a little bit of diversity.
10. Louie And Ernie’s
Located on Crosby Avenue in the Bronx, Louie And Ernie’s Pizza is one of the pizzerias in New York that just hits the right tone of all the parts – the cheese, crust, and sauce.
The classic pizza from Louie And Ernie’s is perfect if you do not want too much fat or calories in your food but if you want to go extra, you also have an option.
There is the sausage slice that costs a dollar more than the classic slice and you get huge chunks of sausage made from pork sourced from a local butcher.
The delicious pizza also highlights its cheesy side as it combines the textures of the crispy crust and the slightly melty cheese.
11. John’s Of Bleecker Street
As the name suggests, this pizzeria is located on Bleecker Street, New York. It is one of the older pizza places in New York that started operating way back in 1929.
John’s Of Bleecker Street is famous for having one of the last coal-fired pizzas in New York. It is popular with pizza enthusiasts who love that small hint of BBQ flavor from the fuel.
Another iconic feature of the pizzas from John’s Of Bleecker Street is the no-slice policy so you can order a super-thin, extra crispy pie topped with sliced meatballs, black olives, and more.
12. Mama’s TOO!
Mama’s TOO is a must-visit in Broadway, New York if you want to taste a variety of pizzas. Containing classic and gourmet toppings, everyone will find what they like here.
The square-shaped pizza topped with hipped ricotta and pepperonis is one of the more popular styles of pizza from Mama Too.
The pizzeria has attracted a lot of customers since it first opened back in 2017 and it is still drawing crowds up to this date, so I think you should try it as well.
13. Joe’s Pizza
Joe’s Pizza has multiple locations, one on Carmine Street and one on Broadway. Joe’s Pizza is one of the classic slice joints in New York and they stand out.
I mean even the plain classic slice I tried from Joe’s Pizza is still better than the other pizzas with unnecessarily excessive toppings from other joints.
That does not mean that Joe’s Pizza does not have toppings to die for; they have great pizza toppings that you can get for an extra 75 cents.
14. F&F Pizzeria
F&F Pizzeria has a delicious pizza crust, making it popular among pizza enthusiasts. The flavors of the crust develop perfectly through fermentation.
The dough is fermented for three days so it emits a slightly tangy flavor that goes perfectly well with the brown butter sausage topping of the pizza.
I love the crust on this pizza because it is not only crisp but also airy inside, making the pizza light on the stomach.
15. Saraghina Pizzeria
Located on Lewis Avenue in Brooklyn, Saraghina is also one of the people’s favorites for good reasons.
Saraghina cooks their pizzas in a wood-fired pizza oven so the pizzas they make are truly authentic. The toppings as well change with seasonal toppings mixed with classic ones.
The creativity of the pizzaiolos in this restaurant is on display with the pizzas and the toppings they use to create beautiful and delicious pies that everyone loves.
There are toppings like artichoke, anchovies, kalamata olives, and more but perhaps my favorite is the simple Napoli pizza full of San Marzano tomatoes.
16. Sal And Carmine Pizza
Sal And Carmine Pizza is located on Broadway, New York, serving up quality pizzas for over 50 years.
The classic toppings like pepperoni, sausage, and spinach are my go-to. The plain slice is also great and sold at only $3 which is the standard.
I love how cheesy the pizza is as it compliments the savory flavors of both the toppings and the thin crust on the pizza.
17. Bar Camillo
Bar Camillo is located at Tompkins Avenue, Brooklyn, and is one of the best pizza places that serve a variety of pizzas that everybody will enjoy.
They highlight Roman pizzas with the “Fior di latte” mozzarella, accentuating the pizza flavors imported from Campania.
What I also love about Bar Camillo is the starters they have when you dine in. Such starters are the Alici Buro which is a delicious combo of house-marinated anchovies and butter.
18. Best Pizza
Havemeyer Street, Brooklyn is the place to go if you are looking for wood-fired pizzas, and Best Pizza lives up to its name because of the authentic pizzas.
The char on the pizzas’ crust is perfect and completes the whole pie’s texture. Staying simple, Best Pizza tops the pizzas with basil leaves which freshen up the pizza flavor.
This is truly the best pizza for midnight snacks when you are suddenly hungry or after a night out and want something to fill up your stomach.
19. Percy’s Pizza
Bleecker Street, New York also has some of the best pizzas you can get around the city. It is one of the cheapest slices you can buy but make no mistake, the quality is still there.
The dollar slice from Percy’s Pizza is so good that others even compare it to the more expert or popular pizza places that offer triple the price for the same slice.
The thin slices are sometimes paired with sausages and pepperoni toppings to complete the meal but the plain slice is sometimes enough.
20. Paulie Gee’s
Located on Greenpoint Avenue, Brooklyn, Paulie Gee’s Pizza is the opposite of the recent one on the list. It is one of the fancier pizzas with a lot more expensive price.
If you want to try something fancy and are willing to pay $18 then Paulie Gee’s Pizza is the place to be with their Prosciutto di Parma and orange blossom honey toppings.
What I like about Paulie Gee’s despite the price is the availability of options for both vegetarian and vegan diets to accommodate all people wanting their pizzas.
21. Coco Pazzeria
I love Coco Pazzeria for the gluten-free cauliflower option and the white and red sauces they put on the pizza. Some delicious starters are also available in this pizza place.
The Focaccia Robiola topped with white truffle oil is one of the best starters you can get before you eat the delicious pizzas in the serene ambiance of the restaurant.
22. Dani’s House Of Pizza
We have not mentioned it yet on this list but Queens, New York is another place with a lot of great pizzerias and Dani’s House Of Pizza is one of those.
There is nothing too special about the toppings from Dani’s. Instead, the slightly sweeter sauce on the pizza makes the pizza from Dani’s House Of Pizza popular.
The restaurant has followed the same recipe ever since it opened with only a few alterations on some parts of the pizza to make way for modern recipes.
I also love how this restaurant adjusts to its customers as they have added other recipes to start your meal before the pizza comes like salad, pasta, sandwich, and even vegan cheese.
23. Scarr’s Pizza
A pizzeria that serves pizzas with modern ingredients and a retro look on the interior design? Only on Orchard Street, New York as Scarr’s Pizza boasts its delicious pizzas.
One of the best qualities of pizza from Scarr’s is the flavourful crust that everybody loves. They also make sure that their dough is healthy by milling their grains.
I love the thin-crust pizzas from Scarr’s and the tangy and zesty sauce that goes with the pie, and it is a must-try even without the common toppings.
24. Zazzy’s Pizza
Last but not least is this pizzeria at the corner of Orchard Street, New York. It is one the best pizza places in the city because of the many recipes aside from the famous pies.
Zazzy’s has a sweet and savory sauce that goes well with the cheese on the pizza. You can also choose vegan cheese if you want that on your pizza.
Sun-dried tomatoes are famous for the specialty toppings but you can also go with the more common and classic sausage for a more familiar-tasting pizza!
