Bertello Pizza Oven is an amazing portable oven that has a great reputation and was even featured in the hit TV show, Shark Tank recently in March 2020.
It was introduced to the world in 2017 and is considered to be the best multi-fueled pizza oven in the market up to this day. It has amazing features and impressive firepower.
The Kickstarter campaign for the first model, the Napoli Pizza Oven, was hugely supported by many fans and was able to raise over $200,000 from over 700 supporters.
Napoli was actually the name of the company and was later changed to Bertello in December of 2019. So if you have the older Napoli pizza oven, it is still basically the same with the Bertello.
This pizza oven is one of the most unique ovens in the market with its ability to cook with different fuels and can be modified for you to use both fuels at the same time.
So if you are looking for an oven that is powerful like gas-powered ovens and can still give you the taste of a wood-fired oven on your food, then consider buying the Bertello Pizza Oven.
Here, we have an updated review on the features of the Bertello Pizza Oven so take a look and see if it fits your standards.
Let’s start with the setup
The setup of the oven is pretty easy. Once you get it out of the box, you can fire it up in less than 10 minutes.
If you only want to use wood as fuel, then you can just place the portable pizza oven on a tabletop and fire it up with a firestarter.
The gas burner can be installed if you want the oven to heat up faster. The first step is to remove the baking stone from the oven to make way for the burner.
Then, insert the wood burner and push it all the way to the back. If you cannot reach the back, there is an opening at the back for you to pull the burner in place.
Then, put the gas burner at the back of the wood burner and tighten the screws on both the left and right side of the gas burner.
The gas burner might appear large but really, it is lightweight and was designed for both power and portability to avoid the oven from tipping backward.
The next step is you need to connect the gas burner to a propane gas tank with the dedicated hose. Then turn the knob until you hear the igniter click.
Put some wood on the wood burner and then cover it with the lid to keep the fire burning inside the oven and prevent it from escaping for faster preheating.
Place the baking stone back and wait for the pizza oven to reach the maximum temperature and then you can cook away.
Features and Design
The Bertello Pizza Oven has the unique feature of combining wood and propane as fuel while cooking and we will get into that later.
This pizza oven is made with stainless steel and has an elegant black finish with powder-coated steel which makes it beautiful and powerful at the same time.
It can withstand natural elements and rust will not be a problem. Since it has a dark color, soot will not be noticeable in the pizza oven so you can fire it as often as you like.
The Bertello Pizza Oven has a cordierite baking stone. Other stonewares are great but cordierite has been proven to be better at almost every factor.
Cordierite baking stones are stronger so they can handle heavy foods and even wet ones. They are also less likely to break since they can take shocks better than most stones.
Bertello’s cordierite stone can handle high temperatures without breaking so they really are perfect when it comes to cooking for a long period of time.
The cordierite stone of the Bertello Pizza Oven measures at 12.5 inches wide and 13.5 inches long which makes cooking 12-inch pizzas possible.
You also have extra room for you to move the pizza around in case one side gets burned. It is also removable so you can clean it easier, just remember not to use water.
The fuel burners come with a lot of power and versatility. Initially, the Bertello Pizza Oven comes with the wood burner alone so you will need to purchase the separate gas burner.
The wood burner has a lot of space for more than five blocks of 5-inch woods. It also allows air to come from the back and improve the airflow inside the oven.
The wood burner also has its very own dirt-catcher so you do not have to worry about cleaning as it catches all the ashes from the wood when it is burning.
The gas burner attachment comes in handy to make the pizza oven give off high temperatures with amazing consistency and flavor from the hybrid burner.
This allows you to easily connect the pizza oven with a propane gas tank and add the smoky flavor from wood with the hybrid wood and gas burner.
It also has legs for it to stand on and prevent burning your tabletop. This way, the pizza oven can get enough airflow and protect your tabletop at the same time.
It has a small opening, just enough for your pizza and pizza peel to fit. The front of the oven is blocked from the top to keep the heat inside even without a lid.
Powering the Bertello Pizza Oven
Using wood can sometimes be a hassle as it brings inconsistent heat and can sometimes take a lot of time when heating the oven.
However, wood is still often chosen as fuel because it gives off that unique aroma and smoky flavor to your food that gas-fueled ovens can never attain.
Gas fuels, on the other hand, are more consistent therefore at maximum, they can heat up ovens pretty fast and will give off the same power for the entire time that you are cooking.
The thing about the Bertello Pizza Oven, however, is that you can use both gas and wood as fuel to attain both the consistency of the fire and the smoky flavor from the wood.
It might take longer for the oven to preheat and reach the desired temperature using the wood but it can get up to a very hot cooking power.
The oven can reach a maximum temperature of 930 degrees Fahrenheit which is perfect for cooking authentic Neapolitan-style Pizzas.
Preheating only takes around 15 minutes for both cases when the oven is wood or gas-fueled. The cordierite baking stone heats up perfectly with the pizza oven and can cook multiple pizzas in no time.
The hot surface and the radiant heat inside the oven allow you to cook 12-inch pizzas in just 2 minutes or sometimes in just 60 seconds.
There really is no need to refuel the oven with wood when you are only cooking a few pizzas. One load of the wood in the burner will last for at least 5 pizzas so if you cook more than that, then you can refill it again.
Refilling the wood burner is pretty easy. Just remove the lid at the back and brush away the remaining ashes and then put another stock of wood to keep the fire burning.
The gas attachment gets in the way when removing the ashes so you will need to get the wood burner from the front when you want to remove the ashes, make sure to do this after the oven has totally cooled down.
The gas fuel burner really keeps the oven heat consistent. So once it has reached 900 degrees, it will stay at that temperature for as long as the gas is burning.
The amazing powder-coated shell and interior insulation keep the heat inside the oven so even if it is cold outside, the oven will keep on cooking with heat.
Cooking in the Bertello Pizza Oven
I would say that cooking in this oven is pretty easy. From the setup to the finishing touches, the Bertello Pizza Oven assists you in cooking.
The small opening of the pizza oven hinders you from using large cookware so you can only use a small pan when you want to cook other recipes that require additional cookware in the oven.
The knob at the back of the gas burner attachment is great for controlling the fire that comes out of the propane gas tank but you will need to go around to reach it.
The attachment is pretty long so you will have a hard time accessing the knob if you are standing right in front of the pizza oven.
Pizzas come out amazing in less than two minutes. If you want to cook recipes that are spread out separately such as cookies, you might want to make sure that you keep an eye on them.
The ones near the back of the oven often get burned when left unattended. You will need to rotate the cookies to get even finishes on each of them.
You can sear steaks in this oven and they will come out great. The heat from the roof of the pizza oven allows it to cook evenly and the fire at the back gives the sear with the hot cordierite stone.
Cooking in the Bertello Pizza Oven is easy and you can continue cooking for as long as you want with the gas burner attachment.
The fire from the gas keeps the fire inside the oven hot with consistent flames and the wood really adds to the flavor of the food.
You just need to refill the wood burner if you want that smoky flavor in your food. Since you have the gas burner as the main heat source, you can choose any wood for cooking.
Personally, we prefer cooking with woods with aromatic flavor such as apples. This way, it gives off the amazing flavor without you worrying about the fire.
Conclusion
Bertello Pizza Oven is an amazing addition to your backyard picnics. It is also portable so you can bring it wherever you want with ease.
The only hassle when traveling with the Bertello Pizza Oven is that you will need to bring with you the propane gas tank. But the oven alone can fit in small spaces in your car.
It is powerful enough that it can cook pizzas in less than two minutes and they come out perfect with amazing smoky wood-fired flavor.
It is way smaller than all those heavy wood-fired pizza ovens and yet it comes with so much power that I would highly recommend this product!
